The 40 months the CRO received is apparently "slightly less" than the 6 years the prosecution asked for. 6 years is 72 months. That's not "slightly less" than 6 years. That slightly more than 3 years. 3 years snd 4 months, to be precise.

It doesnt matter what the latest problem they find, "This isn't the Brexit I voted for!" they whine. "This is exactly the Brexit we voted against!" We reply. "You won, we lost, get over it!" Because, being the gracious lovers that they are, the morning after the results were snnounced, they all took great delight in telling us "We won, you lost, get over it!", and we've spent the last few years rubbing their noses in it. That lot always have something to be angry about, yet progressive protests are generally a place of joy.

@pre@boing.world Here in Manchester, we "took vontrol" of the buses, which meant (mostly) slightly lower prices, price caps, minor integration with trams and trains, and slightly more regulation, but still no accountability for failing to run services or achieve any time-keeping targets. We also bought a massive fleet of electric buses and handed them over to the operators to run (or not!), because they couldn't update their fleets AND make big enough profits at the same time. Expect this same playbook for all the nationalised industries.

@GeePawHill@mastodon.social speaking as a man, could I just say that, yes, all men have to quit whinging and not-all-men-ing about this - instead of whining about how you are "one of the good guys" and throwing a strop because you think you dont do the things you feel you are being accused of, try acknowledging that this is a problem in all walks of life, and that unless you are actively working to be part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Getting angry and declaring "Not sll men..." won't convince the women in your vicinity that they are safe around you - quite the opposite, in fact. Instead, try living your life in a way that demonstrates this, and do it consistently. Call out exist behaviour from your colleagues. Back women when they raise issues. Make sure YOU are not the one being a sleazebag. And don't go expecting a cookie for doing this. This is the bare minimum we should be doing, it's nothing exemplary, it just feels that way to those who find it easier to be part of the problem.

@grimacing @alice@lgbtqia.space Unfortunately, this is becoming less of a barrier for entry - I know of one popular server that gets multiple join requests a day from ne'er-do-wells, and has now started getting a similar number of AI-generated requests. These are being silently rejected by the admins, but all it takes is for one to slip through. Hell, even here, on my own server, I get a couple of messages a week asking if people can join here, from people who have blank profiles on open-registration servers. Having pro-active mods who check you out before giving access works better than just about anything out there, but it is time consuming for the mods, and isn't 100% secure. All this wouldn't be necessary if certain people would stop deciding they want to punch Mark and instead just let him get on with his life, but no, they have to be dicks and ruin it for everyone who wants to get into that club.

@munchkinbear@mastodon.stickbear.me I had a reputation at work for doing stuff like this - it all started one day when I was sitting in the canteen, bored out of my skull on a break, and I changed the hotspot name to "MI5 van #16" and turned it on. In seconds, one guy stood up, walked over to the window, and stared out over the car park. "There's something going on," he said, "there's an MI5 van outside". People started looking around, wondering what was happening. He explained what he found, so I changed it to "MI5 van #21". "There's another one!" Someone else said. At this point, I'm the only person in the canteen not talking about the major operation building outside, which must have seemed suspicious! "Is that you, Stu?" The first guy asked. Quick name change to "Busted! Abort! Abort!", then tried pleading innocence, but couldn't stop myself from laughing. Over the next few months, several other people tried this, and somehow, I always got the blame!

I've been doing some thinking - as much as I love having my own little instance for me and my own little projects, it might be time to move to other servers/services for my socials.
Don't worry, I'm staying exclusively on Fedi!
Instead, I'm looking at WordPress, using @pfefferle@mastodon.social 's ActivityPub plugin and the Friends plugin.
2 of the accounts I'm looking at moving have existed on WP for a while now, although I haven't been doing much with them.
One of those will be deprecated here on TeamB next week while I test things - details appearing on that account.
The other 2 (including this one) will be sharing a domain, with 1 account (not this one) moving in the next couple of days.
All going well, all 4 accounts will move by the end of June, but this instance will stay open for the 6 months remaining on the domain registration.
(And if it doesnt go well, at least I'll still have those place to call home!)

There is a hotel that backs on to the warehouse yard at work - a hotel used by the local council to temporarily house refugees and asylum seekers.
And because the local Nazi's took all but one seat in the elections the other day, they think this gives them carte blanche to gather and make noise, sounding sirens and alarms, singing (badly) through loud speakers, and generally making an antisocial nuisance of themselves.
A single person standing silently holding a sign saying "i support Palestine action" would soon find themselves swept up by the Police, but this baying mob are apparently alright.

I have to ask- how do Fortune define "self made"? Someone whose parents worked minimum wage jobs to put food on the table, who got a scholarship to a mid tier college and worked their way up? Or someone ehose only qualification for a course at a top tier college was Daddy's bulging cheque book, whose parents funded their first 3 companies that never did anything or made any money, and inherited 7 or 8 figures?

@woe2you @CppGuy @MarkHoltom The only example of something similar i can think of is when Charles Church bought the RAF's stockpile of spare parts for Spifires in the 1980, and managed to build a plane from them that was registered as a genuine, authentic, very late production aircraft rather than a replica, which tend yo use non-authentic parts. But then, the Dpitfire had been out of production for 40 years, and even examples in really poor shape cost more than the parts.

@woe2you @CppGuy @MarkHoltom My understanding is that Henry's are really low-tech as far as vacuum cleaners go - they may not have all the bells and whistles of more modern machines, but they take all the abuse you can throw at them, and are easily replaceable with readily accessible spare parts, which is why they are do beloved by contract cleaners It is apparently possible to build one from off the shelf parts, but why would you do that when it's cheaper to buy a new one?

@jensorensen@mastodon.social Over here in the UK, we don't have anything like this - Primaries are not a thing here, local Party leadership pick candidates, ostensibly by polling local members, but often by parachuting in someone that Party HQ wants. But... There was recently a Parliamentary By-election in the Gorton and Denton constituency, which was widely expected to be a 2 horse race between Labour (formerly a vaguely Socialist party, now somewhere off to the Right of Thatcher *spit* and accelerating, in search of Right Wing voters), and Reform (Nigel Farage's massively profitable company masquerading as a Far Right political Party). And the local Green Party put forward a local woman, Hannah Spencer, a plumber, against career activists from somewhere thst isn't Gorton and Denton, with exactly the same disdain for the Right-wing policies outlined in that comic. And she won. Massively. Because her Party's policies align with the wishes of local voters. This area has always been Labour in living memory, but while the voters have remained the same, Labour has moved away from them. And, given a genuine option, voters have taken it. Be more Hannah Spencer.

If I didn't know better, I would think Hegseth hasn't actually read the Bible, instead getting an AI summary.

I'm still waiting for either a response, or some money to hit my bank account. And I'm not going to hold my brath. I'm also wondering how many of these data removal companies (Incogni, etc) are owned by or aligned withthe big data bokers.

Western economies are based on the movement of money from one place to another, usually from people to companies in exchange for goods and services.For those at the bottom, ~100% (and often more) goes back into the economy, paying for housing, household bills, food, transport, and other neccesities. Those atvthe top are often squirreling large chunks of their money away in offshore accounts, physically removing that money from the economy. Those with next to nothing are doing proportionally more for the economy than those with everything.
