RE: https://mastodon.social/@verge/116999336819924979 This is probably not gonna go this bloke’s way, legal-wise. But I admire him, especially since my guess is that he will deploy the “plums” defence, i.e., when he’s told using a duress password to wipe your phone is unlawful, he’ll say: suck my plums

awh. I just looked up Juju's Cafe in Brum. I used to live very close to it and had quite a few very excellent breakfasts in there: it was the sort of place that did a slightly frou-frou fry-up (wild boar sausage rather than a greasy spoon; I like both) but I was up that way a few weeks ago and it was a building site. I thought I'd see when it might re-open and... https://www.jujuscafe.co.uk says that Jules died! I didn't know that. That sucks. Sorry to hear that, Jules&am...

in other news, if anybody has up-to-date recommendations for a good Sunday roast in Birmingham city, I'd be happy to hear them. It's hard to buy a good roast dinner in a restaurant; my mum's is better. Nobody gets the potatoes right, for one thing. Places I have tried: the Wolf (overrated), the Church (used to be good, got bought), the Red Lion (used to be good, got redone, dunno if still good). 1000 Trades is expensive and posh. More suggestions are welcomed!

do the people who build HMRC's phone maze feel guilty about how much effort they put into making the phone maze route you to a "haha we hung up without you ever talking to a person" end point, or do they feel happy about having done it?

you thought it was difficult talking someone through doing things on a computer when you're on the phone and can't see what they're doing? the turbo level is talking someone through setting up an in-car entertainment system the same way, especially when you can't actually talk on the phone and do things at the same time because then the car's bluetooth takes over the call and only displays the phone call and not the entertainment system

RE: https://mastodon.social/@danyork/116511753802210926 What killed Google Glass the first time around was calling the wearers “glassholes”. Someone needs to do the same thing for Facebook glasses.

Do I know anyone who works on the Royal Mail web team? If so, why is the parcel tracker so terrible? It doesn’t seem even possible for someone to create a link which shows you tracking for a tracking number. It uses #/hash/navigation like it’s 2011. You can’t refresh results to update them. Maybe there are good reasons for this. Maybe it’s just not been touched for 15 years. I’m happy to listen. But please make it better.

There are people who think that #DnD DMs who want to inflict their lore on players should stop doing that, and they have a good point and I partially agree. I'm not talking to those people, here. So, my sisters and brothers of #DnD DMs who like to lore dump. I see you. And I ask: why is the legend lore spell so expensive? It is a gift to us as DMs! It's the players literally asking for a lore dump, which is what we want to do anyway! Why should it require expensive components? Ca...

switched my desktop back to light mode a couple of days ago because of sun position, and... it's actually nice and I'm keeping it. Not sure why I stuck in dark mode for so long. Just 'cos it was trendy? have I actually changed my opinion on which I like? faint worry that the answer is "it's easier to read and your eyes are rubbish now", mind

woo, I have a ticket to see Game of Thrones: The Mad King at the RSC! Hooray! Rather looking forward to this; I've never been to the RSC. Many thanks to my secret web of contacts for helping. And I presumably get to find out what actually happened at the Whents' tourney at Harrenhal, which as far as I can tell was the bloody omphalos for literally everything that has happened in Westeros for the last twenty years https://www.rsc.org.uk/game-of-thrones-the-mad-king/

Apparently now three people in my #DnD party have horses and they can all talk to those horses. So now I get to embody three horse NPCs. They never told me about this at DM college.

I read this yesterday, but https://britishprogress.org/reports/ai-and-the-uk-labour-market-the-evidence-so-far is encouraging. People are using LLMs, but they’re not being fired in favour of them. Obviously the way such things are created is largely with theft, which is why I’m part of the big class action about that. But I would like them to become one more tool in the toolbox for real people, to be used when useful, and made without stealing, and without ceding power to Valley arseholes, and m...

I got to go back to Snowshill Manor, which is just as cool as it was last time (https://www.kryogenix.org/days/2017/10/15/charles-paget-wade-and-the-underthing/). Still impressed with the carved ivory ball inside another carved ivory ball.

No voting for me today (there's no election in Birmingham). But for the rest of you, remember to go and vote, remember to take photo ID with you (even though you should not have to do so, you do have to), and remember to not vote for Tories. https://stopthetories.vote/ for who to best tactically vote for in your area, if you don't have a preference yourself.

This is the talk I did at #StateOfTheBrowser. It's about how we set up @owa , how you can do your own open web advocacy, and why that's important. And about poetry and the Lady of Shalott. I'm quite proud of it, actually. Video, transcript, and slides at https://www.kryogenix.org/code/browser/the-mazy-web/ -- have a watch, and let me know what you think. And if you'd like to see this talk in person, I'm giving it at #OggCamp this weekend as well, and proba...

OK, the latest HMRC government wheeze for people who work for themselves from home is that I gotta set up a "rental agreement" between Actual Me and Company Me for use of the house. (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/income-tax-removal-of-the-tax-relief-for-additional-homeworking-expenses/removal-of-tax-relief-on-non-reimbursed-homeworking-expenses has all the gory details.) The accountant tells me that such agreements are available online -- I can look, obviously, but...

@janl couch question: how does using JWTs for auth (so no _users entries) interact with couch_peruser? I don't mind manually creating the userdb-(hash) database for a given user who uses JWTs rather than _users to auth, but how do I grant that JWT suer permission to edit the userdb-(hash) database? We're a bit confused over here :-)

RE: https://social.vivaldi.net/@brucelawson/116416058610955950 I’d love to see the Safari team say, we could make our platform the absolute best at web apps. We could lead on that. And people would trust us more than Google. There’s an open goal right there for us; all we would need to do is be allowed to take the shot.

I have heard it said, occasionally a bit contemptuously, that everyone thinks the music they grew up with is the best. I’m not sure that’s the case, or at least I’m not sure that a lot of people who think this are actually correct. But having just sat in the pub which obviously has some sort of eighties playlist and caught myself singing along to Terence Trent D’Arby, Paula Abdul, AND Hall & Oates and knowing all the words, it might be true about me
