On the rails again… Today is the start of an 8-day holiday in the North of Spain. @wendy@mendeddrum.org and I are headed to Madrid with @quixoticgeek@social.v.st and @MagicLike@soc.sekundenklebertransportverbot.de, where we will be joined by @darkphoenix@not.an.evilcyberhacker.net before heading off to León later on this evening. Today’s itinerary: https://moof.space/trip/2026-08-11 León is, of course, right in the center of the path of the eclipse across Spain tomorrow. Not only that, but i...

Long-time followers of this account will know that I play #JetLagTheGame Hide + Seek with @darkphoenix@not.an.evilcyberhacker.net and @quixoticgeek@social.v.st. Most recently we played a long game in Germany early last month. Whenever we do play, we tend to livetoot it (ish) and we get asked questions about our house cards and our house rules, especially as we mention both during our coverage. People have asked us to publish our rules, and as the designated rule keeper, I keep saying to people...

Today, in incomprehensible bureaucratic annoyances: The Spanish Abono Único (AU) The AU was established as a single monthly ticket that covers all medium distance, regional, and renfe-operated commuter trains and state-run coaches and busses. It does not yet include local transit, but that is apparently on the way. It costs 60€ for adults, and 30€ for under-27s. Reading the Royal Decree (1.2.b) in which the ticket is created, it only requires Spanish residency for the youth version of the tick...

RE: https://mastodon.uno/@miniBill/117031882482597212 Three things: ⁃ Password management is a pain, as it involves manually editing .htaccess files ⁃ As a result, you end up giving one password out to the group of people, which makes for other social issues down the line if you just want to give temporary access ⁃ This will be used on iOS devices, and Safari's handling of basic auth doesn't save your username and password in the keychain, which means you have to type them in every time...

I am currently preparing a statically generated website. The site itself will be public, but i would like to have a preview version of that site to share with a few friends who are going to be nitpicking it for me. I’d like to put that behind an auth wall, preferably something a little less basic than basic auth. Is there something lightweight that I can use? I’m serving from caddy, proxied via traefik. I am happy to run something on docker, or if there’s a European-run service I can plug in...

Renfe has dropped a new Cercanías app, with a more modern UI. https://apps.apple.com/app/id953441960 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.renfe.renfecercanias (does require Play Protect) There’s a lot of rough edges that it doesn’t take long to find, but at least it does a lot of the basics in a relatively reasonable way. It shows next departures, route information, real time alerts, ticket prices, multi-train routes, and so on. It also allows you to buy tickets, though does not...

TIL that back in 2005 the tourist boards of the various cities that have AVE stations got together with the national tourist board and created an initiative called “Ciudades AVE” which, amongst other things, has published the website https://spainbytrain.org So if you want to find out where you can go and what you can see using Spanish high speed trains, that’s a starting point.

No spoilers here… but if you haven’t seen it yet, the latest episode of Game Changer - Count the Rice - is one of the best yet. Make time to watch it, and you will also want to watch the behind the scenes afterwards.

Last year Gibraltar, the EU, the UK and Spain signed an agreement that maintained Gibraltarian sovereignty over the country, but made them de facto members of the Schengen area. As a result, for the first time in 100 years the fence on the border between Gibraltar and Spain was to be taken down. It was a 9 year negotiation, trying to undo centuries of disagreement. A year on, and the last piece of fence was taken down last week. There was celebration and jubilation as the last part of the treat...

RE: https://chaos.social/@pseyfert/116964019150721738 I can’t say I've found them to be particularly terrible. Whilst not the most modern and airy, they get the job done, don't stink the train out, and are generally clean. I’ve seen a lot worse on other trains, even premium ones.

On the rails again… #Interrail #CrossBorderRail Today @wendy@mendeddrum.org and I are on the well-trodden (sat?) path to home in Barcelona from Karlsruhe. Today’s itinerary: https://moof.space/trips/2026-07-22 I have taken this trip a number of times now, and it’s always bittersweet. Especially the days I leave @darkphoenix@not.an.evilcyberhacker.net behind and continue on my own. That being said, once I’ve made my 17 minute change in Strasbourg, it’s smooth sailing. A trip to Lyon, time fo...

On the rails…STFU it’s #TGVTuesday Today it’s @darkphoenix@not.an.evilcyberhacker.net’s turn for a whimsical treat. When they were reminded by DB Navigator that they could take a TGV to Karlsruhe, they pounced on the idea. So we’re doing a silly and taking a TGV to Karlsruhe. Today’s itinerary: https://moof.space/trip/2026-07-21 There are two TGVs a day in each direction between Stuttgart and Paris, and in Germany they stick to German railway rules: no need for reservations, all the various D...

Hot take: Toilets should be gendered, but not the way they are now. There should be “Men” and “Everyone Else” toilets Nobody deserves to have to suffer the smell that we men seem to always create in toilets. No, I don’t know why or how we do it, but we do. But at least with that gendered split, it’s only some people that are subjected to it. This post is brought to you from a toilet that is supposed to be sparklingly clean, but still has a certain miasma to it.

On the rails again… #Interrail Today I’m starting off on a whim. I have once more joined up with @darkphoenix@not.an.evilcyberhacker.net, and we are supposed to be heading over to Stuttgart to meet with @n0toose@chaos.social this afternoon, but as I had time to kill, I was going to sit with them in the DB Lounge. I left my bags (and @wendy@mendeddrum.org) with her, and went out to buy some breakfast in the station, when I spotted an ICE-L pulling into a platform. I decided to head there and...

On the rails again… #Interrail #CrossBorderRail Today @wendy@mendeddrum.org and I are travelling all the way to Köln Hbf. Today’s Itinerary: https://moof.space/trip/2026-07-19 It was supposed to be a 12 hour trip, but DB has already cancelled one of my trains and made it 13. It’s also my first time on a DB Fernverkehr IC Erzatzbus, which I’ll be taking from Frankfurt (the Oder one) to Berlin Hbf. All in all, a long day sat around doing not very much, with at least one very tight connnection...

On the rails again... #Intercity Today @wendy@mendeddrum.org, a friend and I are heading up to Gdańsk Główny on an Express Intercity Premium train, PKP Intercity's flagship High Speed Service. Today's Itinerary: https://moof.space/trip/2026-07-17 This service is run on Alstom Pendolino Novo ED250 units, although the trains themselves are not tilting. Well, it doesn't tilt, but the suspension is quite generous, so it sort of feels like it might. It travels at up to 200km/h, which i...

On the rails again… Today @wendy@mendeddrum.org and I are taking a journey to Warszawa. This will be our first time in Poland, and so we are excited! We are going on a loco-hauled PKP Intercity EuroCity train from Leipzig Hbf to Wrocław Główny. And then with a tight connection onto a train to Warszawa Zachodnia. There I’ll be meeting up with a friend, and spend a day or two sightseeing, before we head up to Gdańsk. Today’s itinerary: https://moof.space/trips/2026-07-15 Sadly, I am parting w...

On the rails again… #DTicket Today @darkphoenix@not.an.evilcyberhacker.net, @wendy@mendeddrum.org and I are heading to Wörlitz. We’re hoping to find some interesting trains on the Dessau-Wörlitz Eisenbahn, and Wendy and I will also be visiting the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm. But for the moment, we’re grabbing a nice and well-kept Bombardier Talent 2, on a regional train to Dessau. Today’s itinerary: https://moof.space/trip/2026-07-14 (CW: distorted eye contact)
