I wish this timeline wasn't the steaming pile of greed that it is. #AI could be such an amazing game changer for so many groups of people if the goal of it was to help people instead of to make CEOs rich. Like...imagine if you had a model built specifically around helping people navigate medical insurance claims. Not for the insurance company, for the consumer. It could call on your behalf, wait on hold, communicate what needed to be adjusted or fixed or whatever, and if the model broke...

It is 8:29 AM and I have already had enough internet for the day so here’s a picture of a bunny with a pancake on its head.

Good morning, You have reached a neutral post. While you’re here, the world outside is paused. Take a moment and breathe. Your shoulders are doing that thing, let them relax. You may have forgotten your cup of tea. Why don’t you go make a fresh cup, I’ll wait. This will be here for you if you need it, feel free to stop in and visit anytime you like, want, or need. For now just listen to the rain fall, breathe in the cool air, and pause.

@dumont@corteximplant.com For folks outside the US, I hope they use the hardware to build cloud service providers that offer options that aren’t Microsoft, Amazon, or Google so they aren’t reliant upon us for infrastructure. For us in the US, I would love to see those servers help reverse the enshittification of the internet. New private search engines that actually work, email services encrypted by default, purchasing of media that one can actually own instead of just license, etc.

There are tons of reasons why xenophobia is antithetical to who I am but there's one in particular that is a stand out for me. One of my greatest joys in life is watching a look of elated, surprised, shock come over a person's face when I say something to them in their native language. It doesn't have to be a lot. A greeting, an expression of thanks, a comment on the weather, literally anything. I hold no particular fluency, but I know how to say a smattering of words in at least 1...

It kind of amazes me that this long after "Yes, all men" became a thing that there are guys that still don't seem to understand it and worse still, seem to get more angry at the person saying it than at the statistics that drive it in the first place. Every time something related is posted there are invariably a LOT of guys who will wade right in to talk about how surely they are an exception and they respect women and they're one of the good ones and and and. "Yes all...

I wrote a post when I was on mastodon.cloud that I wish I could find again to share as it was really lovely but since I can’t, I wanted to recreate it here. I had asked folks if they would share what their comfort #food was and if they happened to have one, a link to a #recipe for how to make it. It was so great, folks from all over the world replied and there were some really fantastic foods that a lot of people had never seen before. If folks wouldn’t mind boosting this a bit, I bet we c...

The move by #Sony to no longer sell physical copies of the games isn't just a blatantly greedy cash grab, though it's certainly that in spades. To back up a moment, for those who don't follow gaming news, Sony recently announced that as of this January they would no longer be selling physical copies of their games. Much like with streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, "purchasing" a game digitally from Sony does not actually grant ownership of the game. What you are...

I think this year, as June draws to a close, we should just keep having #pride parades and wishing people a Happy #PrideMonth and just keep it going to see if anyone says anything. “Y’all…wasn’t Pride Month last month? Nope, sorry, it’s in July now.” Move over National Ice Cream Month, it’s Prideuly…there’s still ice cream though. Everyone grows a mustache for Pridevember. Lots of lap-sitting in Pridecember. Pride commeth both before and after the Fall in a holly jolly Möbius of queerness.

When we were looking for an upgrade to our TV, I specifically wanted a “dumb display.” No internet connection, no built in streaming services, just a display that would connect to a computer and show me the stuff my browser was playing from my Jellyfin server. If you want that kind of device, it seems that “Digital Signage” or “Commercial Display” is the category under which you are wanting to look. They do often have network ports as they’re designed to be centrally managed (think hotel TV) b...

Just finished rewatching all of “Serial Experiments Lain” again. It’s probably been 20 years since the last time I watched it and it was definitely interesting experiencing it again with the current growth of AI. Not for the existence of a God figure but for the addiction to the use of the Wired the ancillary characters all demonstrate. That aspect of the story was prescient in ways I never imagined possible. Still a great story, but still one that I likely won’t watch again for another decade o...

Well wish me luck. My stretchy fabric gets here today, and I've watched three videos on "How to sew stretchy fabric without a serger" so I'm about as ready as I'll ever be. We'll see if Youtube sewing videos have lied to me because I don't want to buy a serger machine just to make floppy hats out of sensory-pleasing fabric for my massive skull. I mean...I will if I have to but I don't want to.

What if whenever anyone gets to a billion dollars, they get a little plastic trophy that says, "Congrats, you won at Capitalism." Every dollar they make after that goes to public funds to feed people, house them, clothe them, etc. Then at each additional billion they would have made they get a special border for their profile picture on the billionaire website and a stamp on their punch card and they can trade it in for decoder rings and stickers and stuff. Then when they r...

I really wish that the discussions at work around the use of AI felt more authentic and more honest. Instead they read as a bunch of talking points that were themselves generated by the companies providing AI services and not by any actual thought or understanding of the technology.

It borders on laughable, reading legacy #news agencies reporting about #trump wanting to suspend the gasoline tax as something he can't do on his own, posted in the same editorial section where they're reporting on the war he can't declare on his own against #Iran.

I just got off a call 20 minutes ago. I cannot tell you what action items I was assigned from this call. I can however tell you the three signs of Beck’s Triad, indicating cardiac tamponade even though I have not studied that in 30 years. This would likely be okay were I an overworked cardiologist but I am an SRE manager and the action items are likely more important in my day to day than diagnosing and addressing pericardial effusion. Why are you like this brain?!

Just for grins I’m trying out the latest Ubuntu LTS release. I had given up on Ubuntu for the desktop around version 16 I think…whenever they really started pushing snap-based applications. The performance of the snap applications are still just so so bad compared to installed binaries, but I admit it’s a bit about control too. I hate having things pushed onto me and I like having a say in how my system operates. Yes I know I can just install Debian, shush now, I’m happy and having fun over her...

Why do we not have kotatsu in the US? Given the amount of time we spend in front of a coffee table, the idea of there being a comforter and space heater attached to the table sounds amazing. I bet my cats would love it as well. The ones you can get online that ship to the US look pretty shoddy, I could probably just get a kake-futon, a shiki-futon, and a quartz tube heater and build the table enclosure myself. Anyone I know either buy one in the US that they liked, or built one themselves...

On the importance of being froggy: The play in the #fascism handbook that #trump and his handlers have been itching to play out is a more widespread martial law. They don’t need an excuse mind you, but oh my does it piss them off that they don’t have one in Portland. The corporate media agencies are built around clickbait and even though they’re a propaganda machine for Trump, folks in frog suits facing off against an armed gestapo is too juicy for them to ignore. So now you have folks lik...

Been a bit since I've messed around with any desktop Linux distros so I tried out a few of the ones that entered the field since I last ran a desktop. Bazzite was really interesting, I think for folks new to Linux this is likely going to be a really great gateway drug. The immutable nature of it made it so that a newbie really can't mess anything up but if you're coming at it as an experienced Linux user or admin, I could see the immutability might become frustrating, it did for me...

If you consume any form of media - be it the written word, video, pantomime, interpretive dance - and said media includes the phrase "Such and such expert does not wish you to know this" then they are lying to you and likely have never had a conversation with any expert in *any* field, let alone the one in which they claim to hold ineffable secrets. If this person had ever met an expert in their field they would know that you can literally not get that person to stop talking...

It kind of seems like food producers in the US want to cram protein into everything. I've seen protein sodas of all things. I think I even saw a protein-infused liquor recently...maybe that was a fever dream...I hope it was a fever dream. Anyway, for me, I've been eating smaller meals lately and getting enough protein has become a bit of a problem as I tried to eat less meat - especially with my digestion issues. Unfortunately with my GI problems, many of the #vegan go-to optio...
