The move by #Sony to no longer sell physical copies of the games isn't just a blatantly greedy cash grab, though it's certainly that in spades. To back up a moment, for those who don't follow gaming news, Sony recently announced that as of this January they would no longer be selling physical copies of their games. Much like with streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, "purchasing" a game digitally from Sony does not actually grant ownership of the game. What you are actually paying for is a digital license that can be revoked at any time at the discretion of Sony. So with this new model it is now no longer possible legally to fully own a Sony Playstation game. The reason I say that this isn't *just* a greedy cash grab is because it now also removes the ability for anyone to purchase a used copy of a Playstation game. People who aren't made out of money often get deals on used systems, deals on used games, etc. Libraries frequently carry games that can be borrowed which would no longer be possible under this model. If you haven't bought a console game in a while, or never have, modern console games are very expensive. The ones made by the big studios that people wait with baited breath to purchase, those cost close to $80 USD. How does the phrase go again? Oh right...if purchasing isn't ownership than piracy isn't theft.
