I'm confused how we're having a penny shortage. Did we seriously abolish coining the penny without a plan to actually eliminate the penny from use? (Yes, the specifics of U.S. currency BS are something I don't pay attention to beyond my position that all currency worth less than $10 should be coins. And none of it should have Trump's face or name on it because I see enough of that fucker without having to see him on currency.)

New Parody Site Threatens to Replace CEOs with AI for Tiny Fraction of Their Bloated Salaries If you'd just like to read the site itself, it's https://overpaid.lol/ OverpAId suggests that your company can save $22 million a year with their solution while showing you how to distribute those saved funds toward paying a fairer wage. (I don't think you should replace your CEO with AI. I think your organization should be run by a worker's council. I enjoy a good laugh, though.)

I boost my own toot about it regularly but, in case you've missed it (possibly on account of the boost happening mostly on weekends or because you have my boosts silenced), I am one of those authors who will give away "review" copies of my stories. I will never check on you to see if you reviewed them. If you do review them and the review is something you want to share with me, I'll be thrilled to read the review and may use it for promotional quotes and stuff. But, again, we...

Alright. On July 3rd (by my clock), the admin of Burnout Cafe publicly called upon Mastodon.social to ban / block "homosexual pornography". This was widely seen as a bad idea. And also homophobic, which it was and is. Because of an attempt to impose his bigotry on the whole of the fediverse, Burnout Cafe was subject to a number of fediblock notifications. Fediblock is a hashtag developed by queer and BIPOC people to notify the community about accounts and servers who other members of...

#ScribesAndMakers July 1: Our featured creator is a former librarian. What has been your experience with libraries? Libraries are magic. They're every portal fantasy come true. They're the place we can go to teach ourselves all the things we could not otherwise learn. They let us discover things about ourselves we might otherwise never have the courage to ask. Those who restrict libraries or defund them are burning a Library of Alexandria that belongs to all of us.

🔗 The class action system in the U.S. is deeply broken and flawed and I don’t mean in the usual “I don’t know shit about the actual facts behind the Hot Coffee lawsuit and have mistaken that for a class action lawsuit” way. The most any of us can expect to get for having had our privacy violated by Apple is $20. That’s pretty close to the average price of two regular combos at a fast food restaurant right now. A little more than the average cost of a month of ad free streaming on one of the big...

The Pope (the current Roman Catholic one, Leo XIV) did a thing like ... a week or two ago and it's making the rounds today because someone noted that he quoted "The twentieth-century Catholic author J.R.R. Tolkien". So it's making the rounds. As far as popes hailing from Roman Catholicism go, I like Leo XIV more than most popes on offer. Brevity is apparently not his thing. The Vatican predilection for making exhaustive length numbered lists and using Microsoft Word to format...

Due to reasons, I found myself doing a deep dive on something today which irritates me to no end. In support of the idea that queer people should hide ourselves so as not to offend :blobcatrollingeyes: "normal people" :blobcatrollingeyes: , the guy referenced a study showing that close to 76% of people on Earth were religious. That statistic was used to support the idea that nearly 76% of people were offended by people being publicly queer. Even if it was true that 100% of religions...

On the topic of something that doesn't make me want to scream, I had a Wikipedia page open on Giant-impact hypothesis before lunch because I was trying to figure out an astronomy question relating to a story on a mainstream pen. Got back from lunch and my dyslexia misread part of the page to read "Giant-insect hypothesis" and was very disappointed. So, anyway, those people won't be going to a planet comprised of a planet and a moon that smashed after the advent of life on eith...

Alan is thrilled when his folks suggest he come home from college to house-sit while they visit Europe. It will save him money and let him laze around for the summer. The people in his parents' small town are nearing retirement or are young professionals. It looks like a boring summer until the older woman next door, Stephanie, starts flirting with him. RE: https://toot.cafe/@chartier/116528449108337993 If you use #Edge — and you probably shouldn’t — don’t use its password management function. My current recommendation is to use at least two browsers. One for things you log into (I use #Vivaldi for that purpose) and one set to wipe its history on exit (#Firefox or a fork) with an ad blocker (such as Ad Nauseum) configured. Close the wiping browser between tasks. Let the wiping browser be your default. The 2+ browser strategy won’t give you...

Happy to announce that Beware Of Fangs! is finally ready. Beware is a sapphic, erotic romance story between a human and a vampire. Nicole has sworn to never date a woman and never date a vampire. Paige is both but Nicole feels an inexplicable pull toward her. Will their self-sabotage keep them apart? I'm looking for ARC (Advance Reader Copy) readers. ARC readers receive a free copy of a book in the expectation that they will read the book and review it. Traditionally, ARC readers would re...

As folks are looking at other browsers (due to recent issues with Firefox), the #Ladybird browser has received some positive attention. For your awareness, Andreas Kling, the lead developer of Ladybird, has engaged in transphobia and enforcing misogynistic language in documentation in SerenityOS. SerenityOS is his previous "BDFL" project. I've also heard hints of other issues but I haven't found receipts for those so I'm leaving them alone. https://github.com/SerenityOS/s...

D2D's UBL / Books2Read service had quite a long outage today. Apparently, they use Heroku to run it. Heroku bills itself as an AI service but also they've been around for 19 years so it's more probable that they've lately taken to calling themselves an AI service like other real companies that have succumbed to grift. I only got my updates ready a little before their service came back online. Their outage made me feel a little weird about relying on them for my book links. Tha...

Are you sure you want to quit Discover Notifier? Considering you ignored my setting to only check for updates once a week and you did it about two hours after I did my most recent update related reboot (in which I applied all available updates). Yes, I do in fact want to quit notifier so I won't be continually reminded until the next reboot day. #Ubuntu . Respect user choices and get your updates under control so we're not regularly doing multiple reboot-requiring updates in a week.

I'm now looking at BSD. FreeBSD at this specific moment. BSD is so different than Linux that I'm going to examine this much more slowly. I always thought I might try a BSD at some point and my current lack of enthusiasm for anything in Linux land might be just the motivation I need. If I try it, I'll try it in a VM first just like I suggest to others when they're considering trying Linux.

Ever since I found out about Richard Hatch's final film, I've been trying to find a way to watch it. Cannot be found for love or money (legally or otherwise). It's not that I'm a gigantic Richard Hatch fan but the premise intrigues me and my autistic brain treats a movie that cannot be had almost the same way as it treats a lost thing. I built a VM to test Manjaro in it because it's Arch based but apparently not quite so tailored for masochists. I made a mistake so I ended up having to do the installer over again. I stepped away to do life stuff and the screensaver came up on the Installer and it required a password to unlock. So then I had to use a search engine to find the password for the installer. In theory, it's now installed but I can't tell because first boot is apparently brutal. Having a screensaver on...
