I'm now looking at BSD. FreeBSD at this specific moment. BSD is so different than Linux that I'm going to examine this much more slowly. I always thought I might try a BSD at some point and my current lack of enthusiasm for anything in Linux land might be just the motivation I need.
If I try it, I'll try it in a VM first just like I suggest to others when they're considering trying Linux.

@EveHasWords I used to use FreeBSD many years ago but just recently, decided to give it another try. Their work on the desktop and laptop side of things has really gained my respect. It's not quite "plug and play" like most Linux distros but it's getting really, really close.

@EveHasWords good luck and have fun. i never gelled with FreeBSD for desktop use, but I did have my under-the-stairs mail server running on FreeBSD for decades (it recently got converted to Debian when I started migrating everything to KVM virtuals).
