Piss off a tech bro, speedrun any%: Coding is not the hard part of making software. People are the hard part of making software. Therefore, computer science is a humanities study.

@maaikees@sw-development-is.social you’re correct, but alternatively: computer science is not about making software.

@maaikees@sw-development-is.social Spot on! Coding is easy; meeting user expectations ... not so much. Then there's the ability of stupid people to break almost any package one can produce.

@maaikees@sw-development-is.social As a non-programmer but early personal computer user (Osborne 1) I've always thought pseudocode , writing out the steps you want the program to do was the most important part. The rest is just translation from English (or whatever) to whatever programming language you are using.

@maaikees@sw-development-is.social This is exactly what I have been talking about the last few days. "How to code" has never been the real problem. The real problem is "what to code?" The answers that the technology community has given us have never had much to do, or even nothing to do with equity, accountability, due process, and appellate procedure.

@maaikees@sw-development-is.social software engineering is, but that is also like the super important bit of compsci, the math/logic bit is the easy part, now people are the real challenge

@maaikees@sw-development-is.social coding is just formalised instructions for a computer. The hard part isn't formalising the instructions you need to give. It's understanding the problem and identifying what instructions might possibly get to an acceptable solution. The problem with all "codeless" tools is that people who write code are seen as expensive, but the skill that makes them expensive isn't writing code, it's the skill the users of the codeless tools would need anyway.

@maaikees@sw-development-is.social I have a strong belief that the most important part of software development is communication with other people, coding skills are often secondary

@maaikees@sw-development-is.social i don’t necessarily agree with this (insofar as it would justify a sort of slippery slope argument for basically every [societally necessary] career [society is fundamentally just stratification of people taking care of people] and the classification of pure humanities as a separate field is beneficial even to the humanities) but i don’t think nuance was the intent here and i will absolutely be saying it to every tech bro who gets on my nerves

@maaikees@sw-development-is.social As a sys admin on various software packages over the course of my career, I often found it maddening to try and explain to a provider what we needed. I always seemed to be speaking a language that no one else understood. Now that I work for a SaaS provider I'm struck by how challenging it is to try and figure out what's going on with our clients. I don't know what causes this vast divide but bridging it is a most challenging puzzle.

@maaikees@sw-development-is.social Should be. I'm trained as a psychologist and couldn't agree more. My colleague Tobi put it this way: You get called in to solve a usability problem. When you look into it, you find it's a process problem. When you look into that, you find it's a communication problem. And when you look into that, you find a culture problem. And that's why it's hard.

  • @maaikees@sw-development-is.social god I fucking wish it was cross-functional with humanities studies, the academic world treats it like an abstract branch of math (which is reasonable tbf) while ignoring the ACTUAL real world implementations, which are very much closer to a sociology project than a difficult math project
