Maybe the question is: Do we believe in small businesses? Should self-employed people exist and thrive?

@samsteiner everyone is welcome in the fediverse. As long as marketing is not over the top that would be fine with me. I also promote my own apps and stuff here. What I would like to see though is a professional network in the fediverse. But there is none yet.

@samsteiner I am an architect and would not mind marketing my services but I don't have a big enough reach and I prefer to do my business in the real world but IF something or someone came along here on mastodon then yay, why not...

@samsteiner As I am in control of my timeline I don't see a big problem with ads yet. Also: where's the line between decent promoting, talking about one's work and ads? On a second account I post about the work of a non profit organization and often invite readers to use its free services. Strictly speaking this is advertising. I would advocate for allowing promotion but demanding it to be marked with a common hashtag.

@samsteiner I think, @TheWeeOwl is only here, and has left all the other platforms. And yes, @buersten is performing really well, as @pmj already mentioned.

@samsteiner as a freelancer who follows a lot of self-employed artists on Mastodon, this is an interesting question. It definitely can be—but, as someone who's worked in marketing, I believe many brands have developed poor social hygiene. And small business owners often look to brands on how to run their social accounts.

@samsteiner not selfenployed, but related: unfortunately I don't know many, but there are also SMEs in the fediverse like @buersten or @_bestattung that are quite successfull here. Sometime I would like to compile a list of SME or other mainly professional accounts in the fediverse.

@samsteiner I don't have a direct answer to this question. On the big box media's I promoted my work heavily and gained a lot of clients this way. Coming to the fediverse has been jarring. I enjoy the discussions here and finding like minded people, but I don't honestly feel fully safe to promote my work. I repost my bakery videos, but with a CW which inherently limits the amount of people who will click in. It's more than selling cookies for me, all aspects of the videos are made by me, its a tiny showcase of my film, editing and music work, but it is also definitely an ad, an ad for the best cookies you'll find in Asia. How can people find out about what we offer if we don't tell people?

@samsteiner @MamaLake Personally, as someone who is not self-employed, I don't mind at all if someone uses Mastodon to promote their small business. The only caveat is that it would grate if that was the sole focus of their account, but in that case I would likely mute them. But as someone who has a weekly radio show that I promote reasonably heavily on this account, I am incredibly mindful that I wouldn't want anyone to think I was being annoying with it. I don't get paid for the show, so don't think it counts as marketing, but I suppose the end result is the same.

@samsteiner It's a gray area but already happening. We have lot of photographers, artists, and musicians offering their creations. Generally speaking, people don't mention prices in their posts. And that kind of goes along with my main suggestions: 1-Act like a fellow member of this community. Interact instead of just flogging merch. 2-Clearly indicate in your bio that you are a small business. 3-Start by using Mastodon to get a feel for it. I block a lot of people only here for money.
