@samsteiner as a freelancer who follows a lot of self-employed artists on Mastodon, this is an interesting question.
It definitely can be—but, as someone who's worked in marketing, I believe many brands have developed poor social hygiene. And small business owners often look to brands on how to run their social accounts.

The way I see it, Mastodon is like a party. - When you arrive at the door, you politely say hello. - You join a discussion instead of standing in the corner. - You excitedly talk about your work, but you also listen to others talk. - When your crush rejects your offer to dance, you don't keep asking them. I think anyone marketing their business who follows good social etiquette will find Mastodon welcoming. The problems start when business owners post to a community they never interact with.
