hi fedi! does anyone happen to know how to acquire a nice witch hat? (i.e. people who sell them, would be willing to make them, or maybe even just instructions I can follow myself) I desperately need a witch hat to complete my character, especially given the upcoming talks I'll be giving ' by "nice" I mean something that I could wear daily, something that brings joy, something that's well made, looks nice up close, and will last forever. (I can find a lot of bad hats, but what's the point...) reposts are appreciated, mrrrow,,,

@wffl after a quick rabbit hole exploration, if you want to go DIY, you can modify a wide brimmed "summer" hat and just make the point longer. side note: looks like the hat comes from the alewife dress ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alewife_(trade) )

@wffl Ì found these pins but haven’t tried them myself so can’t give any personal recommendations. Etsy seems to have a range of hats but it’s a bit harder to find handmade stuff on there lately. https://pin.it/SvETq85TS https://pin.it/134QsvFRC

  • @wffl My sister makes costumes for theater and music performers. I messaged her to see if she was interested in making a witches hat. She is in Washington State, USA. I will let you know if she replies.

@wffl most folks who want a really "economical" witch hat buy them from costume/masquerade stores. they are often made from a lightweight nylon fabric and have wired edges to hold their shape. What I would call a "nice" witch hat, as a costumer, is a proper hat made from sturdy felt. That will hold it's shape without being wired. A stunning array of this sort of hat can be found on Etsy.

@wffl I'd recommend felting, or at least working with felt-fabric to give a nice texture to the hat. Here's a tutorial for how to sew one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCB9w70f2UU

@wffl I was going to suggest these: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/4386398778/butterfly-witch-hat-halloween-black-hat (my daughter has one and it is spectacular) but then you said one to wear every day. Now all I have is Terry Pratchett's Nanny Ogg describing her hat in Witches Abroad: "It's got willow reinforcing all the way up to the point and eighteen pockets inside. Can stop a blow with a hammer, this hat."

@wffl If you don't get any better option, I've got this one : https://www.leonardo-carbone.com/witch-hat-agata-black It doesn't really match your requirements, it's not a really high quality piece of clothing, but it's quite nice and comfortable (to begin with, it's actually made of wool) and, I think, a good value for price. (The clothes from this site in general are rather cheaply made, I still occasionally shop on it because they're good enough for LARP and sometimes they do sales with really huge discounts. I recommend the hat because it is really a cut above the other stuff I bought from them.)

@wffl I have about three quarters of the instructions for making a witch hat, with optional Bernadette Banners' style ear flaps, and I have been sitting on them instead of finishing them for months, if you are interested I can try to bring it up in the priority queue (but I'll need a few days, because I still have to find all of the pictures I had taken and add them to the instructions) (wow. it has been sitting in the queue for 11 months. git.trueelena.org/crafts/sewin… )
