Scoop: #WSocial has been experiencing major technical problems for over a week: it is effectively a ghost town, filled with thousands of new accounts that cannot use the platform. Because my new article contains a possible solution to their problem, by the time you read this the issue may have been fixed. Or not. It has been going on for 7+ days, with complete radio silence by its developers and founders. My exclusive: 🔗 : https://blog.elenarossini.com/w-social-a-broken-ghost-town/ #SocialMedia #ATproto #RateLimiting

  • @_elena@mastodon.social it angers me that VDL and Lagarde jumped on this bandwagon apparently without any vetting – just based on some weird backroom Davos connections and apparently hold themselves too good for and too high and mighty for a presence on the open democratic #fediverse. 😠 They should plusOne the Fediverse. #plusOne

@_elena@mastodon.social One of the best parts of the Fediverse is that everyone has to manage their own load - I could run my instance on a Raspberry Pi, Taylor Swift would need a server farm.

@_elena@mastodon.social I felt it got almost too much trash talking, because I never saw a danger that sane persons would join W-Social. But I was always looking forward for some funny podcast episodes analysing this f dumpster fire. Lots of popcorn potential, though it shows a sad state of EU digital governance.

@_elena@mastodon.social I believe their devs are busy on some algorithm and don't have time for troubleshooting. It's something like: showReplyNumbers = realReplyNumbers^3; showBoostNumbers = realBoostNumbers^4; showLikesNumbers = realLikesNumbers * 3; Currently, they are working to add some sort of random(); to make it look less obvious while their management intensifies marketing efforts. /1!11

@_elena@mastodon.social well, well, well. If only there wad a ready-to-deploy, battle tested, and opensource solution for this problem. But as usual in this unjust and dreary world the surveillance capitalist need to do everything from scratch. All a lone, without help. Or rhyme or reason.

@_elena@mastodon.social Thank you for this article, Elena. To sum up: People on the #fediverse, the network that European career politicians decided was beneath them, help VC-backed #wsocial get their act together. Fedi, you are too good for this world.

@_elena@mastodon.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu EU Commission, please read Elena's article – and, if possible, let us know what you have to say about this: “European institutions moved their accounts to W Social in order to have their data "hosted in Europe" but aside from their PDS, everything affecting their accounts is still relying on American infrastructure owned by Bluesky PBC. At least when they had their accounts on Bluesky, they were on an open network…”

@_elena@mastodon.social conspiracy theory for this level of incompetence: this is manufactured by American Big Tech 1) pitch W as THE Euro social network, and somehow got it presented as if there was nothing else out there 2) make it a terrible user experience for the newbies who try it 3) wait for the articles in non-specialist media to come in "Europe just can't do social" 4) answer that to anyone who talks about fediverse in the future (ignoring that fedi is not European - but it *feels* european to some).

RE: https://mastodon.social/@_elena/116832021297021883 Ridiculously bad start, probably the worst I've seen in 20+ years of using socials. I created my profile and locked in the username. Now I can't log in, and I can't reset the password since the system says my account doesn't exist. I've mailed support; let's see what comes of it. Thanks @_elena@mastodon.social! Wonderful insights and thanks for investing your energies into this research. Another take away for me pertains how the Fediverse is 'complicated' to get into and stick around. Seeing how many political and institutional actors moved to #WSocial overly quick tells me that it isn't healthy either, to not know what's happening behind the scenes. Apparently, these actors haven't learned a thing, neither about the past, nor about network infrastructures. At least with the bit of friction you have with the fediverse, you have a didactic moment of realising that servers are somebody else's computer.

@_elena@mastodon.social This is playing out just as badly on Bluesky from what I read so brand well and truly trashed. Eurosky likely to be the happy recipient of disgruntled European users though they don't have the funding of W (in this case it has made little difference). Late stage capitalism eh. Just an undisciplined cash grab and to hell with working product or even ethical behaviour.
