@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place Of course. ... and I say that as an old greybeard who do use LLMs for development. I seem to have the exact same view of it as Torvalds - it's the next progression of "compilers". You can't blame the compiler if your C-code doesn't do the right thing so why would you blame the LLM. Test & verify.

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place I'd hold someone EVEN MORE RESPONSIBLE because they chose #malpractice over #learning it themselves. - Or at the very least asking someone else for help.

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place Its not like the AI company ever takes responsibility for anything their AI does, so someone has to.

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place I always wonder who will maintain and update/upgrade such code. Most junior developers I know don't even understand the generated code.

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place 100% agree. It's always "when the code works, I made this, when the code is broken, the LLM did this", 0 accountability.

@BillySmith@social.coop 2026-06-29 05:50
@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place Hold the manager, who said, "use this tool or we will fire you", responsible. Hold the C-Suite, who listened more to the AI salesmen than to their technical staff, responsible for everything that goes wrong.

@nicksilkey@hachyderm.io 2026-06-29 05:54
@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place hard agree 👏 ... because you did it. 👀 You! Literally! 🏆 If you had not, the code or data wouldn't e x i s t. ✨ No mind what tools you used to make it. Even if you didn't write the explicit code or data "words", you're responsible for their creation at runtime. Others can point to it existing and your actions and understand how the code or data "words" came to be. 💫 There's no ontological evasion of social responsibility possible - less we socially permit it. 👯♀️

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place mindboggling how fast we forgot the two of the most important axioms on working with machines: “A machine cannot be held responsible so it should not make decisions” “A machine has no brains so you have to use your own”

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place My work allows engineers to use AI tools to assist their work. That is rule 1 - if you turn code in, you’re taking full responsibility. If it’s bad and you blame AI, you’re blaming yourself and saying you’re bad. Rule 2 is “no customer data or sensitive company data fed into AI. The only exception is our specific company-managed LLM, which is extremely restricted, and must get per-use approval with these data types,” Some customers have strict “no LLM use.”

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place "What the fuck did you do to my fence? I'm not paying you for this!" "Looks fine to me." "All the cuts are splintered and jaggy! It's a health hazard." "Oh yeah, I didn't do that." "What? Who did?" "The chainsaw." "The... Huh?" "Yeah I'm a firm believer in automated tooling. Instead of spending time manually cutting and smoothing everything, I just trust the machine to do it all for me. It's so much faster." "I paid you expecting a certain level of quality to your work." "You can't blame me for poor workmanship. My hands never touched your fence. Take it up with the chainsaw if you have a problem with it."

indeed, my analogy is like if i buy a wheelbarrow with a sticker saying "50kg max." then it collapses with 10kg and breaks someone's foot, i can blame the manufacturer. But the sticker on the AI wheelbarrow clearly states "Do not use, might be made of marshmallow" so i totally have to pay the doctor's bill @grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place Two weeks ago, I saw a job posting on a well-known career network: - You're used to boosting your performance by a factor of 10 through agentic coding - You’re responsible for the security of your code Since the second point is obvious, it sounds like a bet to me. Then, after just two days, over 100 people had already taken the bet by clicking the “Apply” button. That's kind of creepy to watch - btw: security isn’t the only thing you could bet on in this case... :-)

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place Given the amount of software that ships with "warranties" of the sort that claim they aren't responsible for anything having to do with their software malfunctioning (a practice which predates AI by decades) I'm not sure that this is really the threat to lead with.

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place This isn't even an extremist view. Everyone is responsible for code they utilize/deploy... If they argued they received it on a message board or something it still wouldn't make them immune.
