@skaverat@skaverat.net Unix time includes seconds, so I would think that the trouble would start with people born at or before midnight (00:00:00) UTC, if anywhere. There are lots of folks who are older than 54, so I have to imagine it's a solved problem, but I've never considered how those dates are represented… Interesting question! Now I'm thinking about it too.

My problem has been that, as an "II" suffixed person, a lot of data aggregator database owners have merged my information with my dad's (more his into mine). The most jarring of which was a recruiter reaching out to me a couple years after my dad died because he had a resume with my contact information but both of our technical backgrounds.

@skaverat@skaverat.net Most common implementations of time_t use a signed integer, so it's trivial to track last dates. So I would be surprised if anyone had issues, and would be curious to hear about this as well. 1969-12-31 23:59:59 UTC would be -1 which I can see being easily confused with an error but anything other than -1 is pretty clear.

@skaverat@skaverat.net I’ve shamelessly used 1970-01-01 as a birthdate for years on basically anything that doesn’t genuinely require it for legal reasons. I can tell you the number of sites/apps that refused to take it is definitely more than zero, but also not high. I could probably count them on one hand with fingers to spare.

@skaverat@skaverat.net Nobody stores birthdays as Unix timestamps. It turns out there were people born before 1970 so it isn’t very useful.

@skaverat@skaverat.net Not personally, I was born the year before - but I have caught programmers substituting a value of 0 for database null in their code before. I tell them to use a maximum date/time value instead, punt the problem forward by a few centuries.

@skaverat@skaverat.net as a Unix geek I have routinely used that date on sites that insist on a birthdate (but don’t really need to know as they just want it for demographic purposes and to verify I’m at least a certain age). It’s reasonably close to my birthdate anyways. I’ve never had an issue on those sites. Now obviously I’ve never used it at a bank, etc.

@skaverat@skaverat.net No, but some police and bar staff have had real issues with it. Even when backed with government issued ID. The IT issues I have are mostly straight from "falsehoods programmers believe about names" and once "falsehoods programmers believe about addresses". You would be unsurprised at the number of USA based sites that say "your legal name does not meet our requirements so your account has been removed"
