One of my favourite features of the #fediverse is seeing people *learning things*. There are so many folks here discovering dying arts and trades. People learning how the things we take for granted work, and endeavouring to implement them themselves! People getting their #HAMradio licenses, #selfhosting, making clothing, blacksmithing, gardening, repairing their own things, backporting modern software to run on windows 3.11... Y'all are my people. Never stop learning, and never stop sharing what you've learned.

@sb@metroholografix.ca This hits home for me … I renewed my ham license early this year, and it was an adventure. The Trump-appointed FCC made it a lot trickier in 2017. (I’m now 70, and my call sign is K2OOI! Everything after the “2 ” is a letter, not a number.)

  • @sb@metroholografix.ca I don't think Rob Sawyer is on Mastodon ... yet. For many years he was one of the few carrying the torch of getting Wordstar to run on more modern OSes than DOS x.y. Today, he's the torchbearer for that effort. You can read his thoughts on the subject here: https://www.sfwriter.com/wordstar.htm I think his efforts have a wider applicability. There are too many pieces of software that have been abandoned. That's not to say that more modern software doesn't provide compelling arguments to switch for most users. But the older applications had specific features that sometimes weren't seen as worthy of carrying forward. And with the loss of support for older formats, data is being lost. For the second time today, I have a justification to quote Roy Batty's dying words from Blade Runner: "All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain."

@sb@metroholografix.ca The contrast with the antisocial, capitalist algorithm driven, sociopathic behaviour encouraging platforms is remarkable! I consider the #Fediverse the only truly social network.
