If Facebook is behaving like you still have an account, it might be because you still do. If you deactivated rather than deleted, your account is simply waiting for you to log back on. It's important to spread the word about the difference between deletion and deactivation so people can make the choice to walk away from Facebook permanently.

@Meowthias@mastodon.world @futurebird@sauropods.win ugh. Reminds me that we're likely to be headed back to an era of "good luck unsubscribing from anything" we've never seen because "HAHA Business"

@Meowthias@mastodon.world it was SO complicated! I did it ~5 years ago and it still wants me to log in as if I haven't left.

@Meowthias@mastodon.world Probably best to put it in a comment, rather than in a post; FB often rejects links in posts.

@Meowthias@mastodon.world I deleted and have been off FB for many years now. It still wants to log me in under my account whenever I click a Facebook link. Like it’s still there.

@Meowthias@mastodon.world I'm not entirely sure its actually possible to delete a FB account. Even if you do, I suspect it keeps all your data permanently, despite what it may say, and it would be possible to log back in at a later date. This is a suspicion though, can't confirm and happy to be proved wrong.

@Meowthias@mastodon.world would it be easier just to post something to the centre of politics; I like fair and free elections and don’t like my president to be a criminal

@Meowthias@mastodon.world Also, maybe don't delete Facebook. One should consider what protections exist against someone else grabbing your name and impersonating you if you delete your FB account. What I've done on such sites in the past is scramble my password into something unguessable by everyone (including me) and be done with it.

@Meowthias@mastodon.world You cannot trust that Facebook will follow through on your request. This happened to me. Made the proper request in 2018, thought I was over and done with the platform, left it behind, glad I did. Then, an event occurred that made me wonder, unnecessary to go into those details, but lo and behold there was my undeleted account in 2024. I have now made my old posts only visible to friends, and unfriended everyone but my spouse, effectively deleting the account. It involved an awful lot of tapping, but anger can be quite a motivator. The trouble is I still cannot trust anything about that platform. They are a bunch of criminals and enablers.

@Meowthias@mastodon.world I remember having to go through this a few years ago. Nightmare! Also, they make it impossible to return anonymously. I recently tried to set up an anonymous account just to use a group I wanted to belong to - and I did it from a private browser tab. It appeared to work but I never received a confirmation from them. I think they secretly trashed me because of my desire for privacy.

@Meowthias@mastodon.world literally took me 1.5 years to finally delete my account. Not sure what was happening to prevent my permanent deletion, but am thinking it was something nefarious.

@Meowthias@mastodon.world In, dunno, 2005 I think, I found two or three articles online written by people who tried to shut down their facebook account, and to have all their postings and stuff permanently deleted. They described that this was impossible, they described all the hassle they had with facebook. So I decided never ever to join fb. I was young, I wasn't really internet savvy, yet I found that information and I learned from it.

@Meowthias@mastodon.world You should really move on. I deleted FB years ago and just terminated my IG and Threads. There was nothing there but numbing ad bombs, toxicity, and misery. The #meta control freaks have linked the accounts, so you can't keep just one. Take the plunge. There's nothing there worth saving!

@Meowthias@mastodon.world I deleted my old account without any difficulty at all. i don't use apps, though, so maybe, that's why. Still, it was one of the few things I could do well on the main site. This was about four years ago or so. As for my new account, I left Facebook in October, due to their shutting down the Basic Mobile site (not app). I haven't yet deleted my account, though.

@Meowthias@mastodon.world the one thing happening when you delete your account: someone with nefarious intentions will reregister you, impersonate you and try to scam your social graph. Better to empty your account, delete all posts, uploads and the graph. Let it rot then.
