I totally agree, real #opensource is investment protection and insurance for cloudrunners. I think this is an highly underrated value.

@eviltrout@carpdiem.online That's true, but the most annoying part is some platforms don't have viable alternatives. A good example is Discord, for which the nearest equivalent lacks 90% of what people like about it.

@eviltrout@carpdiem.online I'm not disagreeing with the sentiment, but even open platforms can "turn evil". For example, consider what Freenode did a couple of years back. The thing going for these open platforms is that the community can pretty quickly regroup and move elsewhere...much like vast majority of Freenode users moved to OFTC (a well established network) or Libera (the former Freenode admins setting up a new network overnight).

@eviltrout@carpdiem.online serious question and nothing against @Gargron@mastodon.social but are we sure that if tomorrow he is going full Elon Musk, Mastodon will still be independent and free?

@eviltrout@carpdiem.online this may be true on its face, but the Reddit API lockdown appears to be in response to scraping by LLM vendors rather than an attempt to profit from API charging - otherwise they would have agreed on a price. Are we happy that mastodon, in its openness, is entirely open to scraping (enclosure of a commons) by LLM/SALAMI systems? IMHO it's not really ideal.

@eviltrout@carpdiem.online that's unfortunately true for every company in this kind of economy. Untill the only focus will be on paying dividends to investor, instead of focusing on what they bring to people and society, screwing up their communities will be the norm. We need to change the rules at the base of the system if we want to move forward on a better direction. Evolution is "asking us" to evolve our society and we're failing.

@eviltrout@carpdiem.online they can. What they can't do is pull the rug out from EVERYONE all at once.

@eviltrout@carpdiem.online that’s not true. Mastodon can easily do that too. The server that you depend on can easily block other servers and other servers may block yours, so you are still dependent on someone else here as well. It’s a smaller throne that’s dictating, but still a throne none the less.

@eviltrout@carpdiem.online Unless you have a less-powerful web browser. Discourse doesn't like my phone because I'm not using chrome.
