@sequentialsnep I mainly use an Xbox, but also sometimes a first gen Steam controller.

@sequentialsnep Was using Xbox, but switched to an 8BitDo Ultimate 2. I was originally wondering if I fucked up not waiting for the Steam controller, but then I saw that in D-input mode Steam can see every single input method on the pad, including the gyro, so it's mostly no touchpads or capacitive button touch sense, and I'm good with that for PC for sure. Edit: oh also I'd forgotten the Ultimate 2 has TMR sticks just like the new Steam controller, and has a feature the steam controller does not: mechanical toggle switch for the triggers to go from analog to clicky

@sequentialsnep I use an Xbox controller with Gulikit TMR joysticks that I personally installed. No more stick drift!

@sequentialsnep It kinda' depends for me. I have an Xbox controller I use on my Linux PC, an 8 bit do that I use on my Mac, a Playstation controller I use with my Steam Deck, and sometimes I switch them around. The best over all for features has to be the PS5 DualSense. But I find it doesn't like staying connected to my PC sometimes. (everywhere else, it seems fine.) This may be because it's wildly out of date. I don't have a PS5, and they don't make the update software for anything but Windows, so I haven't been able to update it's firmware in years. (The last time it worked with WINE for me.) Xbox series X controller has better reliability across platforms, but the same issues as the DualSense in that I don't have an Xbox and the update software only works on Windows, so I can't update it. 8BitDo Pro 2 controller is just really good. It's become my favorite because it works with just about everything, it's priced VERY well, and it has 4 selections on the back for different connection types, but you can also use these to switch between up to 4 devices. I bounce it between my Mac, Steam Deck, and Switch at the moment. Works great on all of them. Just wanted to put this here because just clicking one controller wouldn't really say it all.

@sequentialsnep Xbox. I am just old enough to remember the controllers you got when you're at a friends house so i will probably never buy a 3rd party controller even though they are probably cheaper and better at this point. Might get a steam controller at some point though

@sequentialsnep I'm a big 8bitdo fan but I am frothing at the mouth over the new Steam Controller. The original had so much promise and they delivered on the Steam Deck. This is basically that as a controller and I have a mighty need.

@sequentialsnep started w/ xbox series, but then that broke in a years time so i started a long search for something that is just as comfortable and nice to use but will last longer tried a bunch of 8bitdo stuff, couldnt get on with any of it personally due to being very picky about buttons and dpads particularly because my hands ache easily. tried the hori steam pad which is....alright? but the dpad again is a bit too stiff. currently i have two gamesir controllers, the "tegenaria" t3-lite (which is playstation styled) - it is very much peak Acceptable but in a good way. couple of the buttons they clearly cheapened out on which sucks but i cant complain much for the price of it. the other one is a t4 cyclone pro (xbox styled) which is somewhat better but is weirdly small imo. i would suggest trying 8bitdo's ultimate 2 controller first before anything else, though. everyone loves it generally speaking and 99% of people dont have the same issues with their stuff that i do, so it's very likely you'll find happiness with them. if not, by all means check out gamesir's stuff, but keep in mind their dpads are WILDLY different depending on the model you get.

@sequentialsnep PS4 but i'll remain forever mad that the "official" linux driver doesn't support the headphone jack over bluetooth. the hardware is capable of it but they want you to buy an extra proprietary dongle for the privilege

@sequentialsnep I've got different ones for different applications most modern games seem to have settled on xbox style as standard I've got a ps2 style controller for games that allow me to use the d-pad mainly and don't force me to use the analog stick I've also got a Saturn style controller in my laptop bag (because there's no analog sticks to mess up or break) and it's a crapshoot whether any random game will let me use it. you might be surprised how many non-ancient games (even 2d platformers) require an analog stick and have no ability to configue/change buttons

@sequentialsnep I attempt to use Xbox controllers with my living room PC but I've been having lots of problems with them but connecting to the wireless USB adapter recently. Usually I just end up using my Gamesir Cyclone 2, which has been a great controller although I don't like how clicky the face button are. I have an 8bitdo controller, and it's very nicely made, but I find the shape to be a little uncomfortable for me compared to Xbox style controllers.

@sequentialsnep the good old Xbox 360 controller. But i only use it if i really have to. My "weapon" of coise is still the keyboard and mouse

@sosh@toot.sosh.co.uk 2026-04-29 22:04
@sequentialsnep Depends on the game! The only time I use a gamepad is for arcade-style racing games (Forza Horizon, Circuit Superstars, iRacing Arcade etc). For pretty much all other games, I use keyboard and mouse. For racing sims, I have my Fanatec racing sim setup.

@sequentialsnep we USED to use a PS4 controller until it developed unusable stick drift. Hoping to replace it with a Steam Controller 2 once they're out and we have money for stuff like that (for the first time in our life!).

@sequentialsnep wish this was multiple choice because I use a wired Xbox 360 controller for my main PC, an 8Bitdo pro for my steam deck, and my husband uses a PS5 controller on the steam deck
