@nicuveo@tech.lgbt I don't see how this is different from Twitter, where anything older than a day may as well never have existed pretty much *except* dril tweets, and that's only because they're very searchable phrases and dril has gone that long without changing account (and without getting banned). Scrolling back through discord channels of tweets, many of them rot away after a year or two even though you have the link. (Masto *does* need to figure out backdated post import for moves thought, yes)

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt you are right! And it can be really frustrating when you’re used to the “long-term repository” aspect. I think it can be salvaged with some tweaks though (more organization; hashtags; themed accounts); also the Mastodon team is working to improve several of these aspects (namely lists and full-text search). Looking forward to that. Maybe it’s also teaching us the lesson that we should save the valuable/useful stuff on a different platform that we have control of…

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt it’s interesting to contrast this with the lemmy/kbin crowd who are rather determined to ensure their platform is searchable. They want it to become a permanent repository of information. Just the other day people were asking the devs about how to improve SEO for the platform. My take is that mastodon is an awkward middle ground between private group chat and social media and that some form of “public square(s)” isn’t actually a bad idea and masto isn’t the place for it.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt Not being able to search other peoples messages is one thing-- while I disagree with the design decision, I`m not in charge. It is the fact that I cannot find my own messages that really annoys me-- I have brought over every file when switching laptops since high school, and want everything I have written available to me.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt I really learned to love losing my social posts every so often. I had opinions on Google+ I would not stand behind today, and I am not sad they are gone. My tweets shall soon perish. Great! If I wanted some nonsense I said to last, it'd be a blog post.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt I generally agree about discoverability. Mastodon works well if you have a network of people you're following but much less so if you want to build that network or if there is a topic you want to find out more about even with tags. Lists which do exist will be a lot more useful in the next version when the exclusive lists are added which filter out from the main feed. I really want binary operators for Hashtags which would make search across them much more useful ie. #math AND #puzzle I also read but ironically can't remember where that fill text search opt in was coming.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt one option is to use a non-Mastodon instance to follow folks via ActivityPub who are on Mastodon (or other ActivityPub services). Something like micro.blog or other services might give you the permanency of your own content you crave. Or you can bodge together a solution - since your Mastodon feed is available as an RSS feed you can consume it via any RSS reader and then archive it however you want (I’m sure there are ways to automate this). I do this for my bookmarks feed.

I've been mulling about this a lot these days, intending to write a blog post about this thing, and your phrasing really helped me focus the core idea better. I've already said in the past that I wished Madison clients had a more email/newsgroup-like interface, and reducing this ephemerality is a big part of this.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt - I don't like the transitory nature of Google+ (gone), Twitter (poisoned) or Mathstodon (unsearchable), so I make copies of all my better posts on my own online diary. It's a pain, but that way I have my own data! Alas, I don't have the energy to copy over all the better replies to my posts. So yes, this is a serious problem that someone should solve at scale, at least for those who don't want their work to dissolve like tears in the rain.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt It’s pretty frustrating not being able to find the things that you want, especially if they’re culturally relevant either to your interests or the platform itself. Mastodon makes me question why I’m on social media at all - what I get from it is enough to sustain my usage: some jokes (not old Twitter tier), lots of informed social/political commentary (top tier, lots of excellent content and posters), and some community. I’ve grown to like its nature and hope it grows in time.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt I think that Twitter created a bad habit of just... Passively keeping track of people while instilling a sense of FOMO if you are not at your feed. Moving to other platforms should be seen as a way to maybe switch to more active check ins on your friends.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt Right, most of the social networks have at least partially a similar effect. What people in the nineties used IRC for, and ICQ and I don't know what, then other IM services, now we use social networks for. Even a very highly focused accounts that consistently post information on the same topic, and answer questions etc - you never go _search_ for information there, you go to _ask_ for an answer. When you consider it, we used to have IRC as ephemeral, and websites as a more permanent way of storing info. Perhaps forums were something in between. I have a feeling that most feed-based social thingies are much closer to IRC than to one's personal website. At least that's how I feel about it all, for a while now. Glad to see I'm not the only one not caring about my feeds :)

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt A thoughtful & perceptive thread. Yes, there is a longing for the transient in Mastodon culture, even if this isn't always dominant. But equally there is ample support for a permanence-oriented style, both culturally and tool-wise.We get notified if someone likes one of our old posts. Hashtags, properly used, create continuity beyond the individual thread. Active use of lists overcomes the forgetfulness of the home feed. The network allows us to develop either style.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt I freely confess I didn't really do the research before joining Mastodon. I assumed, incorrectly, that it was going to be just like Muskodon but without the Nazis, and the impermanence took me by surprise. Clearly tons of people view impermanence as a positive, though, so perhaps the question is, what _is_ currently a good (Nazi-free) social network site for "influencers", or, at least, for people who fondly imagine that their words of wisdom belong to the ages?

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt I am very new to Mastodon, but I've been using bookmarks to revisit info. I wonder if a collaborative effort here would benefit from a way to voluntarily add single posts/threads to a more centralized effort... this is all so new to me and is such a welcome chance of pace from the clout chase and algorithm. I've branched out and found others through boosts and direct questions, too.
