@geospacedman@mastodon.social there is such a tendency here on Mastofon to shout BAAD as soon as AI is involved. To your question: it depends. I have seen so many bad slides generated by humans, that I would prefer good AI generated slides. But: the science behind them has to be good! Are we going to talks to be entertained by human made slides, or hear about good science?

@geospacedman@mastodon.social I first heard “Vote with your feet” at a BarCamp, but I think it should apply to any conference barring attendee rules otherwise. In other words, feel free to walk out whenever, for whatever reason. I personally like to be ready to provide feedback to the speaker should they ask for it (e.g. “I chose it because of the title but realized it was different than I inferred”, “it turned out to be too advanced for me to follow”, or “I had a hard time with your presentation style”), but that’s hardly required and not everybody’s up for that.

@geospacedman@mastodon.social Your argument can be applied to clipart as well, which most presentations use, because most people aren't graphics artists. If the graphics is there to avoid the presentation becoming too boring, I don't really think your argument works. If the graphics is important, sure. But otherwise, use a better argument, lile climate change.

@geospacedman@mastodon.social I wish people who don't need slides would just stop using them. I find they all too often distract from the topic at hand. Throw up a picture of your dog or a bird, and just leave it up there. I'd rather not read along with the speaker while they read their slides out to the audience. Too distracting.

For some reason, many people, and even most of the people, are firmly convinced that a *talk* must be accompanied by some visuals. that poses huge problems to people who are not able to "deliver good visual presentations" (blind, low-vision, color-blind, people with other vision disorders and people who are simply not perceiving what is "good-looking" visually). So, if you want to *talk* today, you basically are forced to do some visuals. Before AI those people (like me) had no chance at all. Nowadays… it's this.

What if I use a Canva template? What if I use a PowerPoint template? What if I use a Google Slide templates? Would you self-righteously walk out of a talk then?

If it doesn't then enjoy the talk and ignore the images. I have used AI images in a presentation. That doesn't automatically mean that the content was AI generated as well 🙂
