I love this tile frieze in one of the ground floor shops in the Glasgow Style Caledonian Mansions on Great Western Road. Currently home to Roots, Fruits and Flowers, its first occupant, in 1904, was Northern Farmers, a butcher, meat and farm produce seller, and this frieze may well date back to this time. #glasgow #tiles #architecturephotography #architecture #kelvinbridge

A fine example of a wally close in the Broomhill area of Glasgow. A wally close is a tiled a commununal stairwell a Glasgow tenement, with the word wally being a Scots word for anything made from ceramics or china. This can include wally dugs (china dogs), and wallies (or false teeth). This, in itself, is derived from an older meaning of anything fancy, splendid or highly decorative. #glasgow #broomhill #tenements #tiles #ceramics #tenementtiles #wallyclose
