Problem: the pockets have ripped out on your lab coat. Me (boring, lazy): Safety pins! My student (creative, motivated): Sew it up and add awesome embroidery! #lablife #chemistry #craft #sewing #embroidery #jellyfish

Finished a thing in a weekend! This one does not have pockets, but is super cute nonetheless. Pattern is Arielle from Tilly and the Buttons, cheers to @jjcelery@mastodon.ie for the heads up. https://tillyandthebuttons.com/collections/patterns/products/arielle-skirt-sewing-pattern #sewing

For morale reasons, please admire these sleeves that I intensively pattern matched when I made this 1780s or so Redingote. It was slow but relatively easy and very very satisfying because I did all of it by hand! Photo of the whole thing attached to show just how very little it's even seen, and yet! #Sewing #HistoricalFashion #HandSewing

Finished the denim shorts! This time with belt loops and cute bias binding rather than overlocked waistband. #sewing

Should I have used mitered corners on these panels? Yes. Do I care? No Sure it would have reduced some bulk in the corners of the panels, but it sits well enough in the pants leg when it's sewn on that I don't care. This is a personal project to add some protective panels to my riding pants (front and back) to try and prevent tearing (in the pants or in my leg) if my foot slips on my mountain bike pedals (flat pedals with studs IYKYK). Three more to sew on! #claireMakes #sewing

In cheery "Lyn is about to make something she doesn't need but will be a happy project" news, Aldi has brightly coloured blankets this Wednesday that are the perfect size to make a blanket coat. I use this pattern, which is designed to work with any blanket of the right size (150cm wide for large size) and makes use of existing hems, fringes and edge finishes. #Sewing https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/1294068535/blanket-coat-pattern-digital-pdf-video

Okay, gave in, put zippers in my new jacket (but no fabric on the inside yet, not sure what kind of fabric to use-- same pattern on the outside, or something else? But, now my back hurts (I imagine from too much sewing, lol). #sewing

Adding the zippers as an afterthought workes fine. Now will attach two interior panels. Probably just leave the panels open on top to not have to run a line across the front of the jacket. #sewing

I was discussing thimbles when I suddenly wondered about the word’s etymology. It’s clearly not the same as the German fingerhut (finger hat), and I guessed that it’s something to do with the thumb. So it is. It’s “thumb” plus an instrumental suffix, “-el”, which is added to a root to make a tool name. (I wish we still had -el as a productive morpheme in English.) https://www.etymonline.com/word/thimble 1/2 #etymology #tools #sewing

I spent a grand total of $69.25 making this wool coat, so a real bargain! The only new things I bought were the pattern and interfacing. The red fabric and buttons are from an old coat I deconstructed. The beige fabric and linings I thrifted from Stitch Kitchen. Most of the thread also came from there, supplemented with some old stuff I had, plus some from Mum’s stash. #sewing #thrifting #recycling

I used to sew clothes, but for a long time now my only sewing projects have been for household items like quilts, throws and bags, or mending. But I’ve been inspired by talented friends here - especially @craftygardennz@mastodon.nz @zeborah@mastodon.nz and @YGathGoch - and now I’m going to have a go at making this pixie coat! The last time I made a coat was probably in the 1980s 😆 Luckily the pattern comes with excellent instructions. #sewing #MakeItYourself https://www.twigandtale.com/products/pixie-coat-women-curved-fit-digital-pattern-video-class?variant=46563971236135

I’ve got a formal wool coat that I never wear, so I’m going to try and use some of the fabric from that for the new coat. The old one has a lot of panels so some jiggery-pokery will be needed with sewing skinny bits together to make it work. Maybe I’ll use it for the hood, pockets and sleeves. It will be a slow process because fatigue. Yesterday I bought the digital pattern. Today I printed the 40-something A4 pages of pattern pieces, and figured out which size to make. Tomorrow I will tape all those bits of paper together and separate each pattern piece! Then I will investigate what I can do with the old coat and how much more fabric I need. Maybe I will head into town to find fabric on Friday. I think I’ll check if Stitch Kitchen has any recycled fabric I can use first. It’s fun starting a new project! Thank you fedi friends for the inspiration 💚 #sewing

Today I spent ages crawling around the floor as I carefully lined up small pieces of paper 😆I’ve cut out the paper pattern pieces now, so that’s a relief. This is the old coat I plan to deconstruct - I can use its red wool fabric for the hood, pockets and button loop strip of the new coat. I can reuse the buttons too. That depends on finding some other fabric that goes nicely with it though! I will have a hunt tomorrow. #sewing

I’m delighted that I managed to pick up almost all the supplies for my coat from Stitch Kitchen! It’s a social enterprise that aims to reduce textile waste. Everything in the store is donated - bits of fabric and haberdashery and wool and anything you might need for textile projects. They also run classes etc. Even better, they have a sale on and fabric, already sold cheaply, is half-price (ending tomorrow)! #sewing #thrifting

Here’s what I got for the grand sum of $28! The main fabric is a beautiful soft wool. The photo doesn’t show the colour very well - it’s a soft beige and pink with a mottled design. There’s enough for the whole coat, but I think I’ll stick with my plan of using my red fabric for the pockets and hood to make it a bit more interesting. The other fabrics are for linings, and I got some partly-used reels of matching thread too. The only thing they didn’t have was suitable interfacing, so I bought that new. Minnie likes the lining fabric 😆 #sewing #thrifting
