I just did a rather loud happy dance in the courtyard and Don brought me a vermouth to toast. My glaze came out fantabulous. They may not look terribly shiny from the front - but the back, with two light coats, are glossy as a teenager's lipgloss. Fuck yeah!!!! #pottery #ceramics #glazes

  1. That horrible odor in the basement bedroom where we've been sleeping due to the heat? Three dead mice found in the window well outside the bedroom. They've been removed. When I said to my husband, "It smells like something died in here," he said he couldn't smell anything. I love telling him, "I told you so!"

  2. My new passport arrived. Good for another 10 years.

  3. Hot out of the kiln: Experimenting with Laguna B-Mix 5 Speckled clay. I like how this bowl turned out.

So, today I am firing my first set of test tiles with a low-temp glaze I formulated myself using the Glazy calculator (and after reading some truly excellent books on it - credits to Linda Bloomfield, Mary Fox and John Britt.) I am posting this so that, when my tests come out of the oven later, and they all look like shit, I will be forced to photograph them and show you my lack. #pottery #ceramics #glazes

So, this is my very first go at making a glaze at home. The base is supposed to be an shiny opaque white. It all came out a little more satin than super glossy, but I'm very pleased. The plum coloured second tile is the base + 5% red stain and 0.8% cobalt carbonate. The third is the base + 2% rutile. The last is 2% rutile and 0.2% red iron oxide. The second pic are the variations on white and dark grey engobes. Something funky happened on the far right. haha. what's new? #pottery #ceramics

I was trying like hell to get a good photograph of the plum coloured glaze, but last night my lighting was defeating me. However, in daylight, in my courtyard, you can see... it's more subtle than it was showing on the earlier pic. #pottery #ceramics

Bargains! It's last knockings at Denby pottery (UK online outlet) since the firm went bust. We've just topped up our own set at 80% discount. It's in Derbyshire, not the Potteries which all ended earlier. (Full disclosure. One grandad of mine was a scolloper at Aynsley. And, apparently, that's still valid in C21st Scrabble.) #bargains #pottery #Denby #scollopers https://thedenbypotteryukonline.com/

Just fired this vase. if the design for this looks familiar to you, I made this while visiting Canada and was also learning about historic Korean ceramics at the same time. This decoration is my response to a very famous ancient Korean pot using the Canada goose as a substitute for the crane. I’m in love with this pot! #pottery #art #goose #canada #handmade #craft #mastoart

This morning I’m decorating my little katacuchis. It’s a very useful shape that can be used for pouring sauces, sake, dipping vessels or just as a bowl. They can be all sorts of sizes. #Ceramics #pottery

A 200-year-old chamber pot with Napoleon hiding inside. Before social media. Before the internet. Before memes... There was pottery. Made in Liverpool around 1805, this creamware chamber pot hides a 3D bust of Napoleon Bonaparte inside, alongside the word "Pereat" Latin for "let him perish." It transformed an everyday household object into a bold piece of political satire, mocking one of Britain's greatest enemies. @brighton_museums #globalmuseum #museums #pottery

I had the opportunity to take a Rocket Kiln workshop with Lisa Orr her rocket kiln makes wood fire more environmentally friendly, which is awesome! Lisa is also an amazing artist and teacher. I won't gush too much about her, but here's a peek at my table at the end of the 5 day workshop-with just a few examples of what I learned. If you get a chance to take one of her workshops (she has some coming up)---I highly recommend! https://youtu.be/u5xQnzzMfsI #pottery #woodfire #art #mastoArt

Next step in my terra sigillata journey: half ball clay, half kaolin.(200 gm each) in 800 gm water. This time I used equal amounts of soda ash and sodium silicate 1.5 gm each as deflocculant. You can use soda ash alone (washing soda) but it takes longer for the mix to settle and separate #ceramics #pottery #terrasigillata

A couple favorite Earth Tone pots from my last kiln load. I sent them to a gallery this week for an upcoming show. The theme is geometric patterning. I can’t wait to see the work from the other makers. It will be very cool to see everyone’s pottery grouped together—unique, yet united by a common theme. #pottery #ceramics #WildClay
