Warum dürfen X und TikTok in Deutschland immer noch mit so wenigen wirksamen Einschränkungen betrieben werden? Manche Progressive mögen antworten: Weil die Meinungsfreiheit hier heilig sei. Aber sie ist nicht absolut, und diese Plattformen sind keine neutralen öffentlichen Foren. Ihre Algorithmen verstärken Rassismus, Fremdenfeindlichkeit, Homophobie, Stimmungsmache gegen Migrant:innen und andere Formen des Hasses, weil sich Empörung monetarisieren lässt. Meine Vermutung ist einfacher: Diejenigen, die die Macht hätten zu handeln, halten diese Maschinerie nicht für bedrohlich genug, vielleicht weil ein großer Teil der Ideologie, die sie verbreitet, bereits im politischen Mainstream und von weiten Teilen der Gesellschaft toleriert wird. #LeaveX #TikTok #Deutschland #Rechtsextremismus #NoAfD

During an emergency, people searching for relatives and friends need reliable access to timely official information, not dependence on a platform controlled by a dangerous far-right billionaire. I had the opportunity to tell the founders of the Sovereign Tech Agency (@sovtechfund@mastodon.social) that I'm a big fan of their organization. I firmly believe that other countries should have similar initiatives. In fact, the EU should have one too. Their recent €600k+ grant to Mastodon is a great example of what public investment in open digital infrastructure can look like. It strengthens the Fediverse, a real alternative to X. As I’ve argued in the #LeaveX campaign: we already have a viable social media alternative to X (1) and what we lack is sustained funding and political commitment. (2) Thus, if more EU countries invested in improving Mastodon, how quickly could it become Europe’s de facto public square? While most European politicians still prefer X for their official communication, reducing technical barriers could attract a more diverse audience, including the people our representatives want to reach, like journalists and the general public. By the way, it's interesting, though not surprising, that the Sovereign Tech Agency has almost four times as many followers on Mastodon as on Bluesky. It would be great to see them highlighting posts and profiles of some awesome open-source projects active on the Fediverse. 😉 #Mastodon #Fediverse #Bluesky #SocialMedia #EU #OpenSource

After about twelve hours, the same post had received more than 300 shares and likes on Mastodon, while it had only been shared three times and liked four times on BlueSky. I'm no social media expert, but it's amazing how reluctant people are to use Mastodon because of its lack of reach and interaction. Marazion Town Council said it was one of the first 213 councils in Cornwall to ban the use of X. Only 17% of Austrian MPs are still on X. Compare that to Sweden, 66%, the Netherlands, 63%, and the EU, 58%, that gap is striking. Finland is often cited as a leader in digital literacy and counter-disinformation. It makes me curious how Finnish politicians assess X today, as a neutral platform, or as an active disinformation risk.
