Today, #Coreboot met #FreeBSD. https://cgit.freebsd.org/src/commit/?id=5f74217c05a99f38a31a6e4950220964595d4ac8 When I started writing FreeBSD drivers, a friend told me: So you’re just copying Linux drivers and rewriting them for FreeBSD ? Sounds like script work. I explained that it doesnt work like that. First you understand the hardware. Sometimes you have to reverse engineer it. Then you test it. Only after that do you submit a driver. He replied: Fine. Then write a driver that doesn’t exist in any operating system. That turned into a 500 MAD bet. (MAD is Morocco’s currency, not a measure of my sanity.) The challenge is harder than it sounds. Almost every piece of hardware already has a Windows driver, a MacOS driver, a Linux driver, or follows a standard interface. You dont invent hardware. You find a missing need. So I wrote a driver for Coreboot. Normally, the kernel log starts when the kernel boots. Everything that happened before that is a mystery. You can make educated guesses, but thats all they are. With this driver, FreeBSD can read the Coreboot log. You get to see what happened from the very first moment the machine powered on. That is exactly how I tracked down systems where RAM training was taking far too long because of defective memory chips. None of this would have been possible without the amazing work of the Coreboot team. As far as I know, FreeBSD is now the first operating system with this driver. DragonFlyBSD is next.

A computer won't run without an operating system, but all the modern operating systems of 1983 were proprietary, user-subjugating software. There was no way to use modern computers in freedom. We set out to change the situation by developing a free software operating system, called GNU. When the kernel Linux became free software in 1992, it filled the last gap in GNU. The combined GNU/Linux operating system achieved our goal: you could install it in a bare PC, and run the computer without any installed non-free software. Strictly speaking, there was a non-free program in that computer: the BIOS. But that was impossible to replace, and by the same token, it didn't count. The BIOS was impossible to replace because it was stored in ROM: the only way to to put in a different BIOS was by replacing part of the hardware. *oven ding* it's done :ablobcatbongo: Took me a while to finish this because of life-related reasons, but finally sat down and fixed (most) remaining issues during the weekend. Pretty much everything* is working - including S3 suspend/resume, automatic fan control and so on (plus it draws less power than stock, I have no idea what AMI is doing). Feels kinda surreal to have a fully-functional computer :akko_giggle: If you have an "MSI PRO B760-P WIFI DDR4" motherboard (or "MSI B760 GAMING PLUS WIFI DDR4", pretty sure they're the same just with different UISetup skin) you can now flash #coreboot on it. DDR5 versions can be easily added if someone is willing to work/test it, just a matter of telling FSP you're using a different memory type. @jedie@chaos.social I guess this depends on the country. I can buy direct from Protectli Canada. How is this related to smartphones ? Of course there are proprietary blobs in Wifi and other chips, not sure why this means more support needed. Can you elaborate ? Protectli will also load #Coreboot for you on their routers, very useful too.
