Today, only such collectibles souvenirs from auctions serve as a reminder that in 2012, #Donetsk was one of the host cities for EURO 2012 and people could fly there from all over the world. And it turned out that, all things considered, for the people of Donetsk, the world doesn’t end at Rostov, Moscow and industrial plants 100% controlled by the local mafia. Back then, I was still driving from #Poland through the #Ukraine including #Donbas to the #Caucasus, and seeing the non-stop renovations of roads, hotels and stadiums that had been going on since 2011, I thought that even there, things were changing for the better. And I suppose that was precisely the moment when #Putin realised that Ukraine and the Donbas might slip away from him towards economic independence, so he decided to restore everything to the default state of the classic ‘Russkiy Mir’ – that is, squalor, poverty and unemployment, in which the Soviet man is 100% dependent on the state. If not that, no sane person with stable job and pension would voluntarily sign a contract with Russian army to participate in “meat wave” attacks on another country - poverty was the primary requirement here. Reading what Girking’s thugs are doing on the “border” of “Donetsk People’s Republic” I’ve never attempted crossing that route after 2013…

From my days of travelling to the Russian #Caucasus, I’ve got quite a few friends there – one of them is a highlander and he’s fine, whilst the other used to work for RIA (Russian state news agency). I messaged the first one on Telegram, but the message isn’t getting through and I don’t know if he’s up in the mountains or if the Roskomnadzor is already blocking it. So I ask the other one, who spends most of his time in the lowlands, whether Telegram works there without a VPN. And here I get this reply that sounded like read from an official government statement 😂 It depends – sometimes it’s needed, and sometimes it isn’t. On the other hand, the number of cybercrimes and scams on social media has plummeted since communication restrictions were introduced. Everything has its pros and cons. I gather he’s probably still working at RIA 😂 Let me emphasise – it was the sort of question that calls for a yes or no answer. If they cut off the internet for them altogether, he’ll probably send me a letter by post giving a detailed explanation of why life without the Internet has “certain disadvantages, but also advantages”.

The disinformation campaign against the #Katyn massacre appears to be part of a wider Russian effort to rewrite history. Circassian émigré organisations have published an open letter protesting against a film broadcast on state media which distorts the history of the conquest of the #Caucasus in the 19th century – as a reminder, the Russian military campaign lasted almost half a century and resulted in the extermination of 95% of the region’s indigenous population. Most were massacred, whilst some fled to Turkey (“muhajir”). The contemporary Russian narrative first portrays the Circassian peoples themselves almost as savage subhumans to justify their conquest, and then speaks of “voluntary migration” and “geopolitical misfortune” when describing what was in fact #genocide and exile. Added to this, of course, is Russia as the “bearer of civilisation” (Putin even enshrined this in the constitution in 2020).
