OTOH perhaps not, having checked your linked articles, of course they include in that number GitHub copilot, which for it's LLM API access (semi official tolerated) is probably the most useful of all copilot products. But then it's literally interesting for the cheap resell of LLM acres. Sigh

configure them correctly, but that's a very edgy and headache prone for the CPO, CTO etc

I've of the reasons it's that as a typical is company Atlasian treats the GDPR (make no mistake the GDPR is very incompatible with us style surveillance capitalism) as an afterthought. Which causes exactly that kind of fuck ups. As a minimum the CPO will spend days updating legal documentation, spending quality time with legal, all the things that we love to do.

And Atlasian did have subsidiaries in the EU, even in Germany which has a number of legal rules in their civil code that would surprise American lawyers. About B2B ToS changes (that are similar regulated as B2C changes), fairness doctrine in contract law,...

Remember the GDPR is since Schrems II linked to the Charta so EU primary law (what plays the role EU constitutional law in practice, and can only be changed by treaty change, slightly uglier than an US amendment)

Cough, the GDPR does not only apply to EU customers.

An US company that has EU based employee or contractors is bound by the GDPR too.

Much easier to get into that situation than you think.

Cooperations. Subsidiaries. Mergers. All these happen, and are generally orchestrated at such a high level (C level) that the involved people often don't bother with these details.

Generally Atlasian claims that you can run their offerings GDPR compliant if you @nixCraft

By EU standards is business practices are simply criminal more often than not.

Shrug.

One sided ToS change. Unfair business practice.
Atlasian is already an edge cases GDPR wise.
And did I mention that in the EU one generally better have a license for your training data or be an academic researcher.

Literally in our startup training data licenses are the biggest budget after employee costs.

processing.

One sided ToS changes are something that is frowned upon in many EU MS even in the B2B context. Consequences vary by MS from voiding the contract to damages.

Americans complain that EU rules often hit us big tech most.

Hint: by EU legal standards is companies generally behave like business criminals, on a regular basis. Laws are supposed to hurt and hit the bad guys.

Ah, you do realize that using Atlasian with even one EU based employee is a legal minefield (GDPR, employment laws) that meant quite a bit of work for the chief privacy officers of Atlasian customers before, and that announcement is literally a non starter under EU law.

The fact that they let you opt out by passing more or off that processing of the PI is prototypical for robbing Atlasian of any A6 argument that this a necessary data @NineStonesClose @nixCraft

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social Surely, the #GOP can get an AI from each state to comment on the posts?

Besides, what does one Republican from each state prove? That the #GOP still has the popular support of 50 residents (they did not claim Republican voters, did they) of the USA? I think we can yield on this point.

Now, the cool thing about the internet is that if you want to publish things that works (or worked) perfectly fine without these so called platforms.

That are more or less a for of digital leeches sucking money out of the economy.

So no I don't see the value here beside that they've captured nowadays most content, so one is forced to deal with them.

Trivial.

AI is such an umbrella term that all these sentences are neither verifiable nor falsifiable. Yes AI is here to stay. It was a field of research for a long time before the hype wave.
At the same that ugly security fraud thingy that is centered on the USA, that will crash and burn. That hype thing goes beyond the periodic IT buzzword everyone with some experience in the industry has seen.

The really odd thing is it's not the oldies that nowadays are a problem, it's the youngsters, we literally had a complaint today about the PIM/office suite we use, our CEO nicely played that one. He's open to all proposals for alternatives from a company headquartered in the EEA for legal reasons.

Interestingly the C level has no problem IMAP, and accessing the calendar over CalDAV. But the youngsters have never heard of these @kkarhan @momo @badkeys @BNetzA @EUCommission

It's probably not, some countries have really tough laws that they apply to email delivery and privacy that makes even spam filtering a legally dicey proposition

But let me put it like this, who wants to sue a company that has a legal budget bigger than the whole government budget of some of the poorer EU MS?

And in the end as long as the users won't start moving their fat posteriors away from the big tech monopolies, ...

I think they overlooked the trap that Orban himself built into the voting system:

If you look at the results you'll see that fidesz managed to score almost as many seats on the proportional part of the election, as Tisza. But they were clearly the second one even if inside the classical uncertainty corridor for polling, especially in such conditions.

And the fptp part that Orban added sadly strongly favours the party in first place, cough. Which traditionally

was fidesz. Not this time, as they were confronted by a broad church coalition party that collected anyone from "not Orban" fascists to Communists under one roof.

Keeping that going after the election will be the challenge, and that's probably the reason why Victor is not yet on plane to Moscow.

Now the commercial social media that is in the eyeball economy, who needs to optimize engagement?

Let me summarize: A/B testing suggests that quarreling users stay engaged.

@FuturisticRobert @Patrick_Cotter @briankrebs Not really.

While I haven't tried it with MS, my experience as an IT consultant is that commercial support more often than not sucks, even in situations when the vendor should be crawling before the customer.

E.g. Reporting basic driver issues for a CAN interface (over €50k a pop), the premium car manufacturer had only a couple of dozen of these bought, with a cheesy response time of “faster than 3 months” (for acknowledging the report).

Why should MS listen? It's peachy for them. They have a captive customer audience, their performance is literally irrelevant for sales.

The moment people like you start jumping ship en masse they might wake up, but almost certainly not with better products, probably with better fences.

Yes, OTOH, using http outside localhost is an issue.

It's almost never possible to judge the data that is passed to be harmless in finality without the threat context. And on the internet you literally have to many user to consider guessing.

And it's less Google and let's encrypt here. It seems that Microsoft has problems with is internal processes to keep certificates fresh and thus is miseducating users.

Don't you know, war crimes don't apply to Americans.

Of coincidence, Hitler also left all international organisations that might have applied international law to Germany, so war crimes didn't apply to the Nazis either, well. The Nazis were quite surprised and felt the Allies cheated. (They kind of did)

Now today, universal jurisdiction does apply in over 100 countries for war crimes.

So if Americans think they are safe, that's the current

@LukefromDC @alecmuffett Happy prepper life off the grid.

You literally need the Internet nowadays to do your taxes in many countries.

And avoiding Android/iOS devices for national ID purposes, e.g., in Austria, is possible (if you are willing to spend a couple of euros for extra hardware, in this case FIDO sticks), but it's not exactly advertised to the citizens. It's more “if you complain you don't have a 'modern' smartphone, you get pointed that way.”

Or more general with the concept of secure enclaves.

Who guards the guardians.

With the pixels we only have the weasel words of Google that the TPM has no backdoor. While we know that the legal system in the USA could more or less force then to backdoor it for national security purposes.

Totally benign and harmless.

But unused shared libraries are additional attack surface for exploits.

The problem is that Apple is between a hard place and bad place.

They literally brag how they their platform under their thumb. So whenever little fascist states decide upon stupid ideas they need to implement, it's the China CCP scenario again and again: Apple needs to deliver and deliver promptly.

And because they have their platform nailed down like that, it's just a question of time till they'll start forcing upgrades on devices that are "not legal".

The reality bad part of the "force device manufacturers to break devices by law" is that the different jurisdictions can potentially force manufacturers to change their designs globally.

So then to end up with devices and software being shipped with hundreds of binary blobs for "age verification", "id checking" provided by authorities dormant. Absolutely brilliant from an ItSec perspective.

Trust us that age verification module from @alecmuffett

Which explains why I as one of the senior engineers on the team, never had an issue with “coding guidelines.” I was one of the three guys (to a lesser degree) who defined what the guidelines are by decree.
Plus I worked mostly on the production side of the framework.
But yes, the pull requests that were marked as created by an AI were suddenly reviewed with a magnifying glass (truly fine) but also with a set of coding guidelines that only existed at best as a list of brainstorming bullet points.

In my last job, I literally had a manager who had his own little anti-AI campaign (when in the past 2 years the US-style AI hype hit us, the company had been doing “AI” for specialized processing for over a decade, but that had been behind “closed doors” in specialized teams). Actually requiring that the solution by the AI coding agent fulfill all our team's coding guidelines. I asked, so give me the guidelines in written form. Oops, they exist only as oral lore, more or less, “what he says.”

@futureisfoss @TimWardCam @MartinEscardo That's why I'm not a big fan of LLMs as chatbots, professionally.

But LLMs can be used in many other ways, which surprisingly often allows one to use smaller, more optimized ones.

And as there are enough idiots (as I call them, “US-style AI hype market criers”) who exactly consider it a great idea to fire all radiologists and paste X-rays into ChatGPT to get diagnoses, there are enough idiots on the other side that assume humans are perfect.

@TimWardCam @MartinEscardo There is always scope for errors.

I love these discussions that assume humans are the golden benchmark that never makes mistakes or errors.

As you correctly were taught, check your work if at all possible.

And all the clever rules that apply to how to deal with outputs from algorithms apply to human output too. Potentially with modification, because humans can lie maliciously. And with that observation, let's close that argument with a round of “they eat the dogs”

@flippac @woozle @dave Oh, now the target is avoiding even 5 bad replies.

That's an entirely different story than a flood of 100s or 1000s of harassing replies.

And no, I'm not thinking like a #dodo survivor; I'm thinking here like a data scientist.

Zeroing in on a flood of hundreds of items is different from catching singletons in a stream.

Cough, What's that Fediverse thing that you are talking about?

Where are these super star accounts that create 1000s of interactions on a toot?

My definition of immense flood is if I ignore Mastodon for a day after hitting popular hashtags and being reposted by "big accounts" of I get more than a dozen interactions.

Please I'm not questioning that some people are being harassed as the OP describes but I do have problems with massive shitstorms in normal usage.
