A side effect of "modernity" has been different cultures bumping up together and changing one-another - I have been changed. Discombobulating, but my culture is better for it

> declare whatever the west thought was “worth” digitizing or whatever submits to those logic “all the world’s knowledge”.
Yes!
That has been a fascinating conversation among archivists that sometimes comes up on my radar. I too thought it was super exciting to archive "all the worlds knowledge". It did not occur to me that was a cultural bias. Not all knowledge should be archived, it invoked a lot of cognitive dissonance in my brain!

I use hard encryption for communication with my (very non-tech savy) friends, using IP. Surveillance is very hard in that case.
I am talking about Signal. It is not perfect but it does show that surveillance can be avoided

> in particular the internet is a set of protocols and standards all of which enable warrantless surveillance
No. The Internet is IP which is simply a packet switching network.
It is easier in some ways, and harder in others to inspect those packets for surveillance than it is/was for snail mail, but I think you are exaggerating.

@mttaggart Mēh! Free software maintainers are being swamped with high quality LLM generated PRs for all sorts of classes of bugs
Anthropuc his being dramatic, nothing unique about Mythos, but the time has come

I agree, but playing devil's advocate...
If you write secure reliable software you cannot attract investment and make cashmoney at the IPO. The AI slop merchants will eat your lunch.
In the end Free Software will triumph, but looking at the example of operating systems where the worst sell best, and the Free Software OSes are the best and sell worse, is informative
In the long run quality wins, in the long run we are all dead

No. They cannot.
But they can make me much better at my job, which is why I use them.

Yes, that is Javascript culture
In other cultures clean builds are mandatory
Impossible, or way too hard, in the fragmented browser world.
That said: that is a chilling excuse to allow a buffer over run. The technical term is "famous last words"

@Bellingcat I think that the UAE have the correct policy. Video of a drone strike is very useful intelligence for Iran
It is a war, the UAE is facing ruin (they are a trading nation). It is very stupid to post videos on social media that are useful to the enemy of where you live. It makes the person a spy. Literally
That said, I love Bellingcat's work.

@isaacfreeman I am very interested in coordinating voting.
I know little about the candidates but I am a member.
So some guidance would be useful
BTW costs $200/year to join FSU, too steep for me.

This how we learn to do our jobs...
I used to have a pile of manuals beside my mouse pad
Then I had documentation URLs bookmarked in my browser
Then I had Stack Overflow (no nostalgia in it has gone)
Now I use an LLM
At every inflection point things got better, not all better because of trade offs.
LLMs are patient , and reliably helpful. (Check their work!)
I have experimented with "vibe coding". So far a waste of time, unreliable wonky design.

That is different, in my mind, to your usual compositions of built environments, that I've stumbled across here

I am in agreement and feel the same urges
But do not underestimate Trump
He is clearly some sort of (evil) genius.
He took over a major USAianin political party, remade it in his image, and lives to tell the tail

@mattblaze@federate.social Thank you for that observation
Obvious, once thought of. But I failed to notice, myself, although I read the most of it

Wow!
I love your photography, makes it more fun here.
Weird how this social network is so full of entitlement and anger.
There is an old adage about feeding the trolls, but you do not need my help.
I hope you keep posting those photos, you have a really good eye for it. Awesome stuff!

Yes. Better politics
> years of evidence of Russian interference and manipulation?
Hardly anyone cares! He still won, by telling people what they want to hear. His opposition are hopeless elite fools thrown up by dreadful incentives in USA politics (in both the Repulican and Democrat branches of the political elites)
Unless the USA gets another Roosevelt I do not expect their "democracy " to survive
Makes me sad
