@plantarum Here in Aotearoa New Zealand we've formed a Green Geeks network within the local Green Party. Partly to pilot and promote using libre software for party activities, but increasingly to help MPs and candidates with political positioning.
The member-led consensus process for developing official Green Party policy takes multiple years, so adding the ability to turn around an unofficial briefing note on a topical tech issue within a day is very valuable.
In general, politicians who focus on ecology and social justice are already aligned with the values of libre software, decentralised networks, right-to-repair, and user freedom. But they often don't feel on firm ground articulating these ideas against industry lobbyists who bring narratives of inevitability. So it's encouraging to have a friendly group of geeks with talking points.

@jsr I read once that Steve Jobs had a great deal to say about the design of the OS X calendar app… but only the parts he personally used. He had other people create events for him and invite other people, he just read what events were on his schedule each day. Thus the rich Corinthian leather, and the fiddly UI for editing.
On the other hand, he reportedly prepared his own presentations (with support from a production team for the final version), so the editing controls for that were excellent.
I've often thought that the same must be true for the rest of macOS ever since. I reckon Alan Dye might have cared a lot about usability for the parts he actually used. But I'm sure they weren't the parts I use.

@artnacrea Thanks! My gut feeling is that I wouldn't feel any safer with the government more involved, as I've seen so many foolish decisions to privatise or award dodgy contracts when governments are led by parties allied to the FSU.
However, I appreciate that you'll have given it much more thought than I have. While you're right that we need strategy as well as tactics, I'm pretty sure I don't have the experience for strategy here. So if I'm focused on keeping the FSU out in the short term, it's because it's what I can offer, not because it's the only thing.

@artnacrea This is the thing. The government can't sell .nz because it doesn't own it. InternetNZ isn't a government entity, it's an independent member-run organisation registered as a charity. And being a charity means its mission is core to its legal identity. It formally exists to promote equitable access to the internet in New Zealand.
So to mess with it, Atlas-connected right-wing groups need to stack the membership. If they get control they can ring fence the charity work into a hands-off trust and make the registry an effectively independent business that the trust owns. Then they can have the trust sell the company to their mates on terrible terms. Along the way they can excite racists and other bigots with bullshit culture war stuff like pretending to be upset when people use Māori words.
But anyone can be a member, so we need to get the word out and keep turning up to vote them down. They're paid to do this, and we can make sure they get nothing for their money.

@stephen I think it's worth holding the line rhetorically on what's "fundamental”. InternetNZ is fundamentally a charity, and right-wing groups are trying to establish a norm that we talk about it as fundamentally a registry business.
Presumably they're calculating that they can't openly say InternetNZ should be shut down and replaced with a private business. So instead they're trying to erode people's sense of what the organisation is for, until it seems like it might as well be privatised.
It reminds me of what happened to trust-run banks. The charitable purpose was marginalised, then the trust was separated from the business operations, then the business operations were sold to a commercial bank, then it was rebranded as just branches of the commercial bank. At each step it seemed like the values will be protected, but the result was that community-owned banks became privatised.
I think it's worth being pedantic about.

I haven't engaged with the slack much myself, but libertarian assholes will always try to flood online forums to create the impression that their views are the norm. They're specifically targeting InternetNZ, and the people doing worthwhile stuff have less time to engage in stupid debates from untenable premises. Wasting the time of people who are trying to do good work is a deliberate tactic.
That may mean it's no longer a good place to find your people, and if the slack sucks, so be it. But I wouldn't let that stop you turning up at the AGM and voting against right-wing candidates and constitutional amendments.
They have more money and more time on their hands, so they can use these tactics. But they don't control the organisation yet, and we can turn up at the right time to prevent that.

That may mean it's no longer a good place to find your people, and if the slack sucks, so be it. But I wouldn't let that stop you turning up at the AGM and voting against right-wing candidates and constitutional amendments.
They have more money and more time on their hands, so they can use these tactics. But they don't control the organisation yet, and we can turn up at the right time to prevent that.
