@xgranade ok so if say, a cnc operator comes to me and wants help with the cnc machine search engine they wrote with ChatGPT, what should I do? “Stick to your lane buddy”? I personally told them “that’s amazing, if you ever need some help, feel free me to contact me”, because I want them to be able to search for manuals with their computer without using say, Google Drive.

@xgranade I read the article as “there are a lot enthusiastic about building software now, the tools are problematic, but we shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.” Computers and software at large have always been tools of labor displacement and oppression.
PS: I fully agree on the labor solidarity point. Which is partly why I welcome all the people who find a way to gain some agency over computers, through llms or not.

@xgranade do you think that once someone uses an llm they should be banned from programming forever? Or to draw a parallel like the article, should I, age 8, after copying some BASIC from a magazine and proudly saying “wow I made a game!” be shamed and never let near an editor ever again?

@glyph @grimalkina fully agree. I was thinking of something the way you have like, 2 minute tutorials in other tools, because the ironic thing is that dispelling that magic actually makes them _more_ useful.
Something about language bricks most people's brain, and while I feel very removed from LLMs as more than "oh look, words in, words out, very interesting" (maybe it's being bi (tri) lingual or autistic or just loving languages of all type), I'm actually quite convinced that most people involved in creating the tools and models are actually believing their own sauce. The absolute nonsense that is the claude code codebase illustrates that to me.

@glyph @grimalkina As a heavy user of AI (not a secret), someone who thinks about the impact on cognition all the time, someone with personal experience with psychosis (and friends too), I observe the phenomenon with alarm, and it's (there's many others 🤣 ) my main criticism of openai and anthropic and all the other companies out there: not giving a damn about explaining what a language model is and how to defuse the "social cognition + sycophancy" loop.
The first thing I show people when I see them overindexing on the output of an LLM ("see! it says exactly what I believed already, but even stronger!") is to have them regenerate the answer a couple of times, and then retype the exact same question, but phrased backwards. Or add the word "salad" in front. Anything that shows that the LLM is a language model. That simple trick is often all it takes to dispel the illusion. From there you can bring in more AI literacy skills like making sure it uses grounding + citations, etc...
The other one (and that I have learned and practiced for 15+ years now, knock on wood) is to indeed tell people: sleep, food, exercise, fresh air, seeing friends, those need to come first, both as "taking the pulse" of your mental health, and as a way to put a break on the thought spiral.
I do wish indeed that there was more compassion, especially around the topic of AI. A tremendous amount of people use it, calling them brain damaged is not helping anybody, especially if you care about brains.

@jenniferplusplus this is maybe more what i'm reacting to. don't dismiss this stuff too quickly and bathe yourself in false comfort. If you are working on software, there's a reasonable chance these things can do a significant chunk of your job better than you. That they can't necessarily do it all, or do so for an extravagant amount of resources doesn't change that. I also don't want to sound contrarian, I know I might be a bit too autistic in my communication style (and I'm just as frustrated and anxious and exhausted like the rest of us).

I don't think saying that LLMs have gotten scaringly good at finding vulnerabilities (not hypothetical) is adopting the capitalist framing, in fact it's something that as a person supporting opensource and right to privacy, needs to be taken pretty seriously, since we can assume that these tools are in the hands of the government.
There's a fair amount of people (and yes, "AI companies") combining more traditional approaches to vulnerability finding with small models with known externalities to do similar work, one example I could find (I'm not a security's person) as a direct reaction to the mythos announcement: https://aisle.com/blog/ai-cybersecurity-after-mythos-the-jagged-frontier

Here's what's been happening the last couple of months, and this is with _current_ models. There are step functions at play, and I think the step function from "at least some skill needed to wield an LLM to find security issues" to "everybody with a $200 can exploit every OS/browser out there" should be considered very carefully.
Nicholas Carlini saying he found more bugs in 2 weeks than in his entire career with Mythos is not something I can dismiss.
Or daniel stenberg, certainly someone with actual authority and experience compared to me showing the current situation:

@left_adjoint that paper was such a shit show. I remember that I was trying to point out that they messed up with their clever gotcha, or that I tried writing the essay myself and the essay with an LLM, and got so many harebrained responses "oh wow you wrote a high school essay with an LLM you're so clever" or "have you even read the paper" 🤣

@left_adjoint honestly and i might be obv on the wrong side here, but i never thought of clanker as a slur since it doesn't apply to a living being, same way i have no trouble calling some gear "a piece of junk", while clanker lover clearly is derogatory towards a human being and tries to erase their voice by labeling them in their entirety.
I find personally "go ride a dick" as it doesn't really attack the person's personhood or even their anatomy. but then, language is often relative.
I'm obviously pretty triggered by having any argument of mine immediately dismissed as brain rot, since I've heard the whole "you should know better" "you're being obtuse on purpose" thing for so long.

re software "laundering": I just call it “sampling” software now. I have a great collection of samples for many situations I built up crate digging, and now I can make tracks pretty quickly, layering on a little solo when I feel like it. Depending on the situation (say, who this software is for, how much I "transformed" the samples) it'll feel like something I just straight out borrowed, but it'll also feel like mine at some point.
It feels eerily similar in terms of its ethical and creative implications. We'd lose a lot of music if we straight out banned sampling. And sampling royalties are now mostly corporate owners of catalogs pushing money amongst each other.

I think one of the tragedies of the aughts is that people thought java and the ideas behind and around it were garbage because it looked the same whatever the quality of the code and the system.
we lost the JVM, XML, weirdass stuff like javaspaces, and we've been trying to recreate things using json and javascript and WASM and ever growing browser technology.
in fact all of computing history starting from the 80ies falls into the category of throwing the baby out with the bathwater because the water has foam, and then filling the tub with whatever rain puddle happened to be at hand.

So I now have "render surfaces" which are basically a render loop around a runtime session and it's loading a runtime bundle which is javascript which was generated by dropping the render surface into the AI chat and it turned into a reflection tool call and then you can also mount the render surface into a documentation render surface to show its docs and also make a kanban render surface.
I don't even know what I'm saying, but it's more and more starting to resemble familiar concepts, so I know I'll get there.
