@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io there’s also the issue with tech workers that our salaries can’t be written off in the tax year they were paid anymore … they have to be amortized. That doesn’t help our cause much either.

Everytime I see a good SGI or Amiga post I regret not buying back when they were affordable and more available.

The pizza box on the other hand 👌 Have been wanting to get my hands on any Sun & SGI workstation hardware for many years, with no luck. But it’s a good 3.5 hour drive from Maine. Gathering wood from a friend for firewood. This is likely not a prime species (a mix of hemlock and something else, I believe) and there is a little rot on the outer inch of some logs. Will salvage what I can.

I really wish I had a dump trailer or dual axle trailer. A truck would also be great. And it looks like until I can afford a log splitter; I’ll be getting some exercise and working on my log splitting form.

Tons of interests personally, but not at a level I’d throw on a resume. I need to get my hands dirty and put some projects out there. Low level programming, microcontrollers/sensors, games, and just about anything fun.

When everyone around me — my network, local businesses, employers, competition, etc… are all using LLMs

And “people” on social media are bragging about LLMs.

How do I, as a freelance developer, find good clients and projects? There’s no way I can compete with anyone pushing AI slop quickly and cheaply. But it seems that’s what people want to pay for.

I’ve wanted one for years for nostalgia + experimentation. Should’ve picked one up back when they were affordable, but life was too busy.

@awb not Unix/linux specific, but I remember my dad using DBase 2 to create all kinds of cool things for both his job (he worked for some auto parts distribution company) but also even did fun things with scripting out ray casting and such.
