@mzaman@todon.nl you are right, characteristics like intangible issues, uncertainty, affected beings not present can also apply to questions not related to future needs. I think an additional characteristic when discussing questions related to needs is that this tends to get more emotional than other topics because the idea of not having important needs met evokes existential fears and feelings of not being accepted as a being. So this, combined with the three characteristics you mentioned which get more challenging the further into the future we look, might make future needs topics especially challenging. I do think anarchist ideas are a good way to address questions of future needs, not only because we can change decisions as you wrote, but also because of decentralization. IMO it is still worth thinking about more concrete ways to facilitate discussions about future needs. I liked your idea of defining acceptable risk levels first. I think people might even want to form decentralized groups depending on the risk levels they are comfortable with.

@mzaman@todon.nl thanks for the first constructive answer on this question. I agree with all the points you made. However, I think that there are some special challenges with future needs:

how reliable are the predictions? (people might accuse each other of being overly cautious or too reckless)
the discussion is more indirect (it's not "people with their current needs talking to each other" but "people thinking about their future needs and advocating for them". This is kind of representation of a future version of yourself, and representation can have issues. It can lead to polarization and more difficulties in finding common ground. Solutions probably need to involve both research/predictions, structured argumentation, as well as moderated discussions about needs.

Question for those who are involved in decision-making in anarchist circles:
Do you agree that decisions about needs are way more complex if future needs are involved?

(some examples for future needs: need to keep a space for living/projects in the future; need for a strategy to keep a group safe and impactful in the next years; need to keep the biospheres intact for future generations)

And if you agree and have figured out some best practices for facilitating discussions about future needs or found some good texts about this, please share them in this thread. 🖤

@zygmyd yes, I've seen that when researching and I'm very much in favor of skepticism as well. The key thing is that it's the RC version of Co-Counselling that has these roots, not the CCI version I'm writing about. In my article, I have a paragraph that warns about dangerous related practices. I did not include Dianetics in this paragraph as this is 2 links away and I had a character limit for the original article. But you are right, it might be worth including a sentence about that in the online version of the article now.
