I have, in recent years, begun acquiring old textbooks from University Library sell-offs. They're generally a bit worse for wear, making them cheap. They give up information about how they were used. Which pages are well thumbed? Who left a pencil note? Exactly where did the spine crack? For example. My copy of "Exploring Computer Science with Scheme", by Oliver Grillmeyer, 1998. It came from the Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz and falls open thus:

It’s likely they greet any women that don’t meet those performative “standards” with public scorn and ridicule. Likely also that they’d expose their own hypocrisy readily, given the slightest chance, then desperately double down on the face of the scorn of their peers. Pitiful and desperate beasts.

See also Steve Jobs, and a great many of the hyper wealthy. Sure, well adjusted folks are sometimes useful and get taken along for part of the ride, but they’re exceptions.

I’m slowly exploring the forces on the Haiku API and I’m tempted to make a syntactic shortcut for this stuff. I won’t go too early though. Premature macroisation can really spoil things.

@MarkHoltom I live in Ahlem, Hanover. One of my dog walking routes includes both the site of the Ahlem satellite camp (a forced labour camp and now a memorial site), and the British forces graveyard. Ahlem also has another holocaust memorial site, the Gartenbaumschule. Within the last couple of years we’ve seen these sites vandalised by AfD supporting Neo-Nazis. This filled me with despair. Thankfully, the response was clear: massive protest marches. That gave me hope.

@shriramk Hungary was “open” even in the Soviet era. In 1988 I joined an Esperanto club at school. I was terrible at languages, but that club took an annual trip to Budapest. Sadly, my year never got to Budapest because our teacher got arrested entering the DDR - the stasi having grown suspicious of his annual transit through eastern Germany and Czechoslovakia to Hungary. It never occurred to me to wonder why he took that route rather than going through Austria.

However, I’m realising that I fiddle with too many different things these days, so for now I’m not investing more time on that particular project. @justine in my case it was trying to write code on top of wlroots using FFI. It got hung up on some symbols that didn't exist in OpenBSD's "fake" libinput.

@justine yeah, I've had OpenBSD running with Wayland quite happily for extended periods. Stuff tends to hit limitations when you need real libinput support, but other than that, you're golden.

Hell, I’ve even been actively courted by AfD canvassers. It would be easy for me to believe this evil doesn’t exist in Germany, but I speak to colleagues who hail from Africa or Asia. Their life looks quite different to mine. The same for women, trans folks, people with facial tattoos, … Privilege is often invisible when you have it.

Lisp wise, I've always got #racket to hand for experimentation, scripting, presentations, etc. Sometimes I have Common Lisp around (sbcl) for things. Elisp, is of course there, #Emacs is still a big part of how I use my computers in all scenarios.
