Do yourself a favour and don't read the Mullvad thing, they're just trying to steer the conversation towards free speech. I don't necessarily like that they're free speech absolutists, but that's not the issue here. The issue is simply mullvad makes money, money goes to dumbshit founder who does dumbshit things. there's no separating the art from the artist here, if you buy from Mullvad, you're funding fascists.

@endolexi I don't totally disagree with you, I'm actively trying to move away from big tech for all the reasons. However we both have technical capital, we can make choices other people can't. When the tool choice becomes the politics then we can't see that anymore. We need to understand the conditions behind tool choice or lack thereof, make those visible and political, and then change those conditions. Its hard and some of that work can happen on Google docs, they can't do shit about it.

Putting the fundamental issues with GenAI aside for a second, I think I see a lot of parallels between self-driving cars and AI-generated programming. People are mostly okay drivers and okay programmers.

But a machine is always going to be faster and more precise in highly controlled enviroments. Except we don't live in highly controlled environments.

The political risk I see is that we start heading towards a world that's a highly controlled environment, a world built for LLMs not humans.

Fast forward a decade later, and OSM has grown to have 10 MILLION registered users, rendering such bans simply impractical. But not only that, OSM has proven to be simply an invaluable resource across several industries, academia, public administration, and humanitarian efforts, showing that our common digital infrastructure is better shared than hoarded!

My first interactions with OSM were in a country that, at the time, banned individuals from participating in mapping activities. The project back then was less popular (under 100,000 users), so we had to be really careful in participating in it. I only bring it up because to underline how powerful geospatial data is and how it is often taken for granted these days.

I can’t overstate how excited I am that @sovtechfund@mastodon.social is investing in the core technology powering OpenStreetMap. Throughout my years in open source, OSM and its incredible global community of volunteers have always been close to me. It was one of the first profound examples of the power of openness and its impact on digital sovereignty and personal autonomy.

@Edent@mastodon.social I think the issue is compounded by the fact that there is still an influx of contributors to the kernel because of the industry behind it, so those maintainers aren't feeling the heat yet. It's incredibly short-sighted because relying on industry is such a precarious position for any free software project.
