@tante@tldr.nettime.org that's the difficulty. Understanding and communicating that the known commercial applications were made with harmful intent entering the picture pretty early, and that efforts to dismantle them and offer non-harmful and actually useful alternatives should sound different than "[commercial app], but good".
Most consumers don't want lectures. Most consumers don't want to learn how and why mastodon is not a "replacement" for Twitter, or why pixelfed is not just "instagram, but without the shit".
Most consumers just want tools and services to "just work" for them, with zero worries and a clean conscience.
Anyone even having this conversation is already a special interest group, and sure, I can try and push the boundaries and help open minds, and I do so whenever I feel it's worth trying, but it won't make nearly as much of a difference as providing something that "just works".

@w_wobble @baeuchle @alpacamale @afelia Seufz. Nein.

@w_wobble @baeuchle @alpacamale @afelia Na doch?

@lzg also true where AI is pushing out freelancing artists, I guess. They aren't employed anywhere in the first place, but in this case I readily blame countless guys + businessed, who rather prompt crappy AI music, paintings etc. than hiring artists.

Damn, guess now you have to build in an option for users to turn on a fake sync delay haha

@pixiesnoot I'd maybe somehow carefully include the view that managing expectations about 'switching' can be an important part of it. In many ways, seeing it more as a 'restart' of sorts may help avoid frustration. I went to fedi not much as a replacement to anything, I fully expected a very different experience, and as a result rarely felt disappointed.

@mardor Good riddance, LibreOffice.

@tarakiyee I understand, of course. It's just this perception of the machine eating up anything you serve it like that. And I sometimes think the barriers of the mind and the convenience of the conventional are the hardest to overcome. Like, the alternatives are there, and I happily support anyone who's interested. For me the tools just can't be separated from the politics, not when the toolmaker you want to oppose sees everything you do with their tools. Unless of course I'm on some 'poison the algorithm' kind of track, it's just never a good idea to me.

@tarakiyee shorthand is always tempting. But I have to say I do agree that it would feel utterly wrong to me to collaborate on Gdocs for a text about floss strategy. It would be like discussing zero carbon while sitting around a coalfire. And any and all big commercial tech platforms are by now surveillance platforms - using them in any way to plan for countermovement feels self-defeating indeed, like announcing to the powers you want to dismantle exactly what you're up to. And I don't think antitrust law or whatever is going to change anything about that. The best thing anyone and everyone can do is to not use any of their crap, whenever and whereever possible.

Still, wishing you all the best, I imagine it's a long roadmap to implement all the things (mobile app, Linux client, automatic upload, photo suite, office, collaboration etc.)
