NIH is imho worth it because of YOUR specific needs and because you need so much "less" or "simpler" of everything or possibly the opposite too much "I need it differently" and "nothing really fits our use case"

what LLM usage drives home for me is giving a flying fuck about "but you have to do/use X, it's best practice/nobody knows Z/there a framework for it" and really go back to doing programming with programming like you know actually doing "the code" however I (we) think is right and good with whatever language I (we) think is nice and a pleasure to work with because it's my (our) freaking shit and I (we) can do whatever I (we) want prior art would be janestreet/tigerbeetle/pandoc/couchdb/etcetc

Just so we're clear - before you think that the big re-hiring is about "AI doesn't work" - judging by job ads and offers I'm getting - it's "throwing more AI engineers onto AI" your old job won't come back in the next 5 years at least - if ever - and even if it's backfilled, it'll be "AI DevOps" or "AI Release Engineering" or "AI Engineering". If there's big hiring, it'll also be big re-shuffling.

This implicit class-based thinking "my language is better than yours" "my area of computing is harder than yours" "I'm doing X therefore I'm the cooler hacker", "HTML isn't a real language", "web development isn't programming", "mysql isn't a real database" was already ridiculous in 1995 and is inacceptable and devastating to the ALL of us in 2026. And people mean it even when pretending being coy about it "it's just a joke ha ha" and it's despicable.

On the subject of looking for a new job: I'm VERY put off by fedihire posts which go like "I want to do X (X usually being Rust) but I would EVEN do Y which I haven't done in 20 years ha ha" (Y usually being PHP or Java). Are people actually still thinking this is a cool and acceptable attitude to belittle PHP (or Java or MySQL or..)?? This makes me so SO angry because we ARE DOING IT TO EACH OTHER. Like the software industry as a whole doesn't have enough problems already...

I've learned over the last 2 weeks during my quest to teach people to use LLMs to not use LLMs ;) that a lot of people just don't know how they didn't know what a thing like shell one liners exists (and that there's a ton of websites about it) they didn't know that they can give it a name (alias) they didn't know that you can treat your computer like a database (osquery) they aren't even used to old school asking "I want to do this thing and then this and the poke here how do I do this"

I'm VERY curious (if you can tell me) if and how your company does local-and-smol models - did folks just get a chunk of openrouter (or equivalent) to try all the models or did folks just get a handful of GPUs and llama'd it all into place or... I'm particular interested in regular/small/average companies and their decision making process around this IF you decided to actually use LLMs

I have a feeling that it won't be "more Claude" that's deciding over whether or not LLMs are "here to stay" but DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Mistral etc etc Any regular, average company who actually WANTS to have LLMs is IMHO better off with the other models - or even chooses to go local-&-mini models, purpose-made which don't cost you an arm and a leg of qualified developer. Set aside the choice with whom to do business or run it yourself entirely. It seems German companies at least go this route

So I've had two tiny mini micro successes with teaching to use LLMs much less in the sense of "only once instead of repeatedly" basically by teaching a mix of "automation - so useful!" and Alan Keys idea of writing more DSLs per project (which easily translates into Shell or Python scripts) I couldn't convince any of the juniors however to really dig into shell scripting and spent the effort on learning it for real. To them, it's like argueing that learning Latin from the ground up is useful.

Three things stand out for me: It makes it so much clearer (to myself) that certain concepts, ideas, languages, tools are really worth knowing well Alan Kay mentioned in a talk to first write your own purpose/domain oriented DSL so what if I make harnesses then? At work I watch what LLMs are really used for - make tedium go away for starters - and it's ASTONISHING that the skewed relationship between code and "periphery" is so persistent (I've seen once in 30 yrs "golden path" work. Once)

Thinking about harnesses (again): any language which has smooth and cheap spawning/forking/co-whatevering is awesomely suited for all the sub-agent concepts I know totally obvious but it made me realize (again) the power of shell'n'tools and how fast a harness in let's say erlang could actually scaffold something pretty big etc etc I also realize (again) how many things could be formalized in the harness without ever touching an LLM Really sharpens "timeless" programming concepts for me 1/2

Here are two articles I think are reading-worthy if you are interested in some ideas where LLM things might be going: https://vickiboykis.com/2026/06/15/running-local-models-is-good-now/ https://blog.alexellis.io/local-ai-is-not-opus/ This somewhat aligns with the general vibe I'm getting from reading HN threads which are sounding distinctively "sobering up". Haven't seen a hype thread in weeks.

Expanding on "your own tools": There are of course "tools" in the widest sense that ARE really so awesome and remain in use and I wonder what their defining feature really is...

Ease of use mhhmaybe, flexibility definitely yes, sweet spot features and if there's more than it's "scenario" specific "oh if you need to do this then here this is for that use case" but you don't HAVE to use them all, great documentation with working examples with REAL usecases, low on dependencies, makes "it" easier

Expanding on "your own tools":

I'd love an ease-of-Docker for micro-VMS so I would really like to have - paraphrasing here - a Firecracker file as simple as Dockerfile and just pop it up and et voila have my vm-level isolation (haven't looked if it exists already)

How hard is it to write this myself if I dispense of 4385 features Docker has I simply do not need because it's implementing MY tiny itch

(I've seen "own tools" now for 30 yrs in prod and some of them were really awesome actually)

Expanding on "your own tools": I don't use Kubernetes because it's so awesome but because it gives me a bunch of operational primitives in a pretty handy manner. It's also quite well documented and has a great CLI.

BUT

The learning curve of "good Kubernetes" is VERY steep and all or nothing and it forces you into corners which don't matter (to my setup) so if I'd pick the 5 features I really need and re-implement them myself - would it be much harder than learning Kubernetes skillfully?

Also still having a lot of "things shouldn't be so hard" moments when I see WHAT people make LLMs do when I review LLM-based PRs but I'm pretty sure we knew all along that 2 arms long Kubernetes YAMLs or GHA were a horrible idea and I still like CDK better than Terraform so the whole "doing code with code" idea really has a revival and some languages are better suited to do this than others (I grew up with write your own tools because a lot of today's tools didn't exist and it was totally fine)

I've been reading articles about harnesses namely the one about pi.dev and the biggest thing I'm learning is interesting ideas about code management, the power of simple shell tools, how to think about workflows etc.

I'm also realizing you could implement context, code generation and "live updating code" in at least Smalltalk & I think in Lisp as well (albeit with a different concept)

Waiting for "who still needs the model in all this.." basically

(Self-modifying something something)

@erisceleste I actually googled rasmus lerdorf controversy etc etc first because I'm not defending a programming language with an iffy smell there are some I'm avoiding for that reason.

I've now seen twice the notion insinuating PHP is somehow still a lesser language. Some people are apparently stuck in a 25 year old notion of PHP. NOBODY can afford this anymore and if this shit of communities doing it to EACH OTHER doesn't stop, you're just making it easy to be destroyed. So be in freakin' solidarity with each other for a change. I challenge you to say something good about the language you dislike the most. I'm so SO tired of this shit since 1999, really.

@ubernostrum I believe this article might shed some light on the dissonance between "code quality" and "still just not right". it has the right code on a low level and some of the right primitives but it's put together badly - the elusive "good design" somewhere between code and architecture: https://medium.com/coding-nexus/your-llm-doesnt-write-correct-code-it-writes-plausible-code-cd910b4cd210
