I just learned that Oracle, which is shoveling unbelievable amounts of cash into getting everybody to use LLMs, also has a policy forbidding contributors to OpenJDK from using LLMs to generate code, citing code quality, security, and legal concerns: https://openjdk.org/legal/ai

@glyph@mastodon.social I'm not going to defend THE PLAN overall, but having the "Cavil" model think that he can break the cycle by just winning the war extra-hard and getting everyone to see how right he was, thus inadvertently continuing the cycle instead, does kind of fit with the overall arc.

@glyph@mastodon.social This doesn't mean you have to like it or think it's good or that there are no issues with it, just that I think there is a coherent structure to the series and its mythology, and I thought they did an OK job pulling off a conclusion that fit with it.

@glyph@mastodon.social Since I don't and won't do YouTube video essays, tl;dr of how I see it: Early in the series it's established that history is cyclical and there are supernatural elements actively involved in trying to guide people through and help at least some of them break out of it (not a coincidence, I think, that so much of the music is drawn from Hindu texts, or that the Final Five's trigger song explicitly longs for a "way out of here"). Over the course of the series we find out more about what the cycles look like: war over self-determination of an underclass, followed by a splitting-off and exodus of at least one side. Events of prior iterations affect and set up later ones. The cycle has happened multiple times prior to the start of the series: distant past on Kobol. Distant past on the planet the Final Five came from. First Cylon/Colonial war. The Cylons' annihilation of the Colonies kicks off a new iteration of the cycle, which plays out over the course of the series. Supernatural elements visibly present and guiding/influencing throughout. Events from prior iterations affect this one. Series finale involves a splitting-off and exodus (humans + surviving humanoid Cylons settle down, mechanical Cylons go their own way) to close this iteration. Then the final scene shows events on present-day Earth in a way that implies another iteration of the cycle is about to begin, having been affected/set up by events from the iteration portrayed in the series.

@offby1@wandering.shop Well, on the one hand: it doesn't even work for that purpose, since the USA is not the only "United States" in the Americas (not even the only one on the North American part). On the other hand, now that we're 10+ years into the age of literal 4channers and Gamergaters (but I repeat myself) running things in major countries, I'm kind of over the whole provocative-edginess thing as a whole.

Same thing with some of their mod services: they will auto subscribe you to certain legally-required ones based on where they think you are.

@petrillic@hachyderm.io There are a lot of "pay the maintainers" efforts out there. Sadly a bunch of them are scams, but there's also the simple fact that the goal even of the good ones is to turn an open-source project into a de facto business. There's a non-trivial amount of complexity in scaling up from a one-person or couple-people volunteer effort to something that takes in funding, disburses appropriately, files correct tax paperwork, manages a team of people, etc. Some projects are able to make the transition, but I don't fault anyone who doesn't want to, and I'm wary of some of the initiatives that seem too eager to *force* people to do this once their project passes an arbitrary popularity threshold.

@rygorous @bert_hubert So it feels like the strongest position that can be staked out based on this sort of argumentation is that there are some types of programming which are much more informal, one-off, less-specified, which inherently dodge a lot of essential difficulty precisely because of those qualities, and so gains on accidental difficulty can still be meaningful there. But I question what percentage of programming as practiced actually fits that description.

@rygorous @bert_hubert Take, say, Dan's example of a log parser. It's done with a one-off script to solve the problem, and will probably only ever be run once or, at most, a handful of times as Dan tests and iterates it. But suppose someone asked Dan to integrate the log parsing and reporting into a larger application Dan's team is responsible for. Suddenly a quick one-off script doesn't suffice, and suddenly there's a lot more that has to be done, and I don't think it'll be a one-hour job and I don't think even Dan would be able to argue that it's almost all accidental difficulty (curiously, Dan does buy into the framing). The other example, of querying metrics, is very similar. Dan built it as a one-off to "understand some questions"; if instead it needed to be a dashboard that would become a permanent part of their infrastructure, it would, again, need a much more difficult and complex process and the difficulty would nearly all be what Brooks terms essential in nature.

One other thing: I see a recurring argument made that even though a lot of surveys show people don't like "AI" tools, they still have high and growing numbers of daily active users (DAUs), so the "revealed preference" is that people actually like them.

By this argument, people's revealed preference is that they really love Jira.

(the reality in both cases is not "people secretly like the thing", it's "people are ordered by their boss to use the thing", and their actual revealed preference is for not being fired)

A recurring theme among the people who’ve pushed back the hardest on the “No Silver Bullet” argument is that a lot of them are people who are effectively solo — experienced developers who just use LLMs to code up things that they personally want, without neeeding to coordinate with a team or satisfy the needs of users other than themselves.

Not sure what to make of that.

So, given the state of air travel, how are people planning to get to PyCon US this year? Is this going to be the year of Amtrak to the conference?

@cczona Also, stories like this one are not encouraging, but a lot of that person's described experiences rhyme with my own, both when I first tried to stop being a Rackspace customer years ago, and more recently: https://www.computerworld.com/article/1617582/rackspace-is-now-the-roach-motel-of-cloud-platforms.html

@cczona@hachyderm.io I had an internal lead for a bit, but the past tense is relevant there. Rackspace seems to have long ago laid off most of the people I'd likely have any kind of reasonable chain of connections to.

@ehashman It's an interesting and frustrating situation. When I was younger and living in pretty significant poverty, there probably would have been a legal-aid society or something that could have helped me with this. Or if I were significantly richer than I am, I'd likely have an established regular relationship with a law firm and could just have them deal with this as part of their ongoing work for me. But in between those two economic extremes, there's basically not a lot of help available, because not a lot of firms want to take a case this small as a one-off even with a client who could easily pay them to do it. Though I am admittedly guessing at the amount in dispute, because I literally don't know what it is. Their systems (correctly) identified that I'm not the account owner, so wouldn't let me actually see the tickets they were filing for past-due amounts, even though they were also emailing me about those tickets. For now, I'm continuing to work leads, and have also filed a complaint with the state attorney general's office, to see if that'll get anywhere.

RE: @ubernostrum@infosec.exchange

I’m still looking for resources here if you know of any (tl;dr a company threatening debt collection over an account they admit is not mine).

I suspect a single piece of correspondence on law-firm letterhead resolves this, but for every firm I've talked to the dollar amount at issue is too low to even justify talking to one of their attorneys.

If you’re looking for a nice, modern, featureful #Python package and environment manager, may I suggest PDM?

And maybe also toss some funding their way.

tl;dr I'm looking for an attorney (California), urgently, to help deal with an unpleasant company.

Longer context: once upon a time I was a customer of a hosting company called Slicehost. But as you may know, they were acquired by Rackspace, and eventually merged fully into Rackspace's hosting offering. I reacted to this by gradually migrating things off Rackspace and to other hosts. The last thing left was a site I helped run for a community I was a member of.

Rackspace gave me headaches and runarounds trying to close out the account once I no longer needed it, so I used their account-transfer process to give ownership of the account to someone else who was stepping up to run that community site. That was completed in 2018.

Apparently, Rackspace kept that account open all these years, and that whole time was taking a few bucks a month from the new account owner for the privilege of having an account (nothing was hosted on it anymore, that I'm aware of). Until, apparently, late last year when he stopped paying. I have no current contact information for him.

I only know this because Rackspace has been sending *me* emails about their problems trying to get money out of him. I've gone multiple rounds now with their customer service trying to get them to leave me alone. This week I thought I had succeeded because they told me the account finally closed, and they also told me, on the phone, that I don't owe them anything as they acknowledge it's not my account and hasn't been my account since 2018.

But in the last 48-ish hours:

* I've discovered they were still putting my name and an old mailing address on the invoices they were sending
* I've been told by a different support person that I am somehow a "billing contact" for the account despite all the other support people telling me I have no responsibility
* I received an email (this morning) from Rackspace claiming to be a "Final Demand Letter" and threatening the use of a collection agency

Self-serve resolution by trying to interact with their people has failed. I am now actively looking for an attorney who can help me resolve this swiftly and efficiently. Recommendations for what *kind* of attorney, and for anyone you might have worked with and liked in the past, are welcome but also understandably time-sensitive.

@davidism @hynek Yeah, I mentioned you can do it. In FastAPI it really feels like fighting against the framework. In Flask the blueprint stuff is a bit better, but just as a matter of personal taste I still prefer just not having the bound decorators to begin with.
