After reading the essay about boring tech (https://terrygodier.com/the-boring-internet) by @tg@indieweb.social, I’ve been wondering about the DMA and other regulatory things. The chat control, the platform regulation, the age verification, all of it, requires that a central authority checks an ID, reads your content, etc. And you know what has no central authorities? The boring tech that is simply specs, protocols, etc.
Most of the loud arguments about tech and privacy vanish when you move to boring tech.

Its actually easier to open old Sketch files in Figma than it is to convert them into modern Sketch files so i can open them in Sketch. Its as if the people at Sketch wants me to use Figma…

@Gargron I have a wonderful rose perfume. It was a gift, I could never afford it, because its actually made from roses. Apparently it takes about 4.000 rose pedals per 100ml, and its not being made anymore. For special occasions, I will put it on.

@Sketch@mastodon.design is it really shipping when last I tried (beginning of this year) to use Sketch it took less than five minutes to run into my first bug and less than 48 hours until I gave up, because there were so many bugs I couldn’t use Sketch at all? After the first few hours I got tired of filing every single bug, because there were too many, and filing them takes time, and after two days, I cancelled my free trial early.

I believe the best alternative will come in a few years, at least on macOS, when most users have upgraded to an M-Chip strong enough to support larger models. It’ll probably run offline.
Not sure how or if that might also happen for Windows or Linux, because you really need the power of an M3 or above for this to work well.

Here are some things we could do:
- Educate our politicians on technology.
- Voice our disagreement with companies using US-owned infrastructure.
- Find and promote viable alternatives and be willing to pay extra.
For a start: What do you suggest I use instead of DeepL?
