Every pro-renewables politician should be working at 100% capacity to flip the "the greens are making your life more expensive" narrative into "the fossil fuel lobbyists are making your life more expensive" right now, but I fear our side is too nice to effectively exploit a situation like this

Android 16 for the Fairphone 6 is here. Still slower than some mainstream brands, but much faster than previous Android rollout. Hope they keep improving!
The Huawei Watch Ultimate 2 is the most interesting hybrid watch I've tried yet. A much better dive computer than an Apple Watch Ultra, a much better everyday smartwatch than any Garmin or Suunto. Oh and it also does sonar messaging! It does have some clear flaws though. Here is my review:

I wonder more and more whether bombing Iran will turn into America's own version of Russia's "3 day special military operation" in Ukraine. A quick regime change strike except it's neither quick nor does the regime change
You can now watch Maja's first ever review 🥲

We should have a term like Dunkelflaute, but for fossil fuels. They seem to be way more unpredicatble than renewables these days.
How about Fossil Flaute 🤔
Everything is doom and gloom in the news cycle and I've been really cynical lately, but a surprising amount of good news came out in tech this week, so for a change I decided to dedicate a whole episode to things I found to be mostly positive!

The Friday Checkout is now also on Spotify. I'll see how the platform works, but if you use Spotify, give the show a follow as I need 1000 followers to enable monetization ✌️

I used a MB Air M1 with 8GB of RAM until ~2 years ago and rarely ever felt that it didn't have enough RAM, or power in general. Sure there are use cases where one might need more, but many seem to think 8 gigs is some unusable junk. I think it's not, if the price is right. Which on the Neo it is.
Fairphone put out a document that takes a holistic look at the environmental impact of electronics. Everything detailed by component, material, process, etc. Really interesting for those looking to dig deeper
My first ever video on the Submerged channel is live! Give it a watch if you're interested in diving 🤿

On the plus side with Iran, Russia and to some degree Venezuela now all being basically at war maybe countries around the world will decide that a fossil fuel dependence is not just bad climate policy, but also bad for sovereignty?
The "funny" thing is that I wrote this tweet after reading about the Anthropic DoD clash, but then the Iran strikes also happened and there is enough stuff you could classify as insane on a daily basis that you wouldn't even know which one a person was referring to
Going through my photos from Thailand right now and I found this kitty drinking from our swimming pool in front of a Full moon party towel :D
I spent 3 weeks in India's tech capital, Bangalore, trying out every type of transportation, visiting startups, organizing a meetup and a lot more. Check it out!

It would be so great if it turned out that Donut Labs was the real deal and not a scam. I still lean towards something being fishy, but 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Has someone theorized yet that Americans might really like cruise ships because just like Disney Land or college campuses, it's the one of the only places that they experience being in a dense, walkable environment?
Hey @ecosia@mastodon.social do you have any update on rolling out your own index with Qwant? I saw some limited testing last year, but nothing since 🤔

Motorists & conservative politicians keep complaining about "dictatorial" traffic calming measures such as bollards. Meanwhile:
- 68% of surveyed citizens living in the area approve, 25% dislike the changes
- collisions where humans were harmed down by 29%
- pedestrian & bike accidents down 34%
- car ownership in affected areas decreased by 9% points
Traffic calming is a massive success and most people who say otherwise they are either wrong or have an agenda.
Upon popular request, I'm planning a meetup in Bangalore! If you're around, come by to say hello and have a friendly chat. I don't have any activities planned, just a few hours to nerd out with fellow tech enthusiasts :)
When:
Saturday, February 21st, 3pm. We'll be around for a few hours, I guess.
Where:
Cubbon Park, at the "Gazebo sight"

If you get lost, you can join the TechAltar Discord.
2 announcements:
1. I'm in Thailand taking a short break from the usual routine, so no Friday Checkout this week.
2. But because I can't actually stop making videos, I'm also starting a new YouTube channel with Maja called Submerged, haha. As you might know diving is our biggest hobby so this channel is dedicated to making videos about dive gear and more. If you're interested, you can subscribe here: @submerged-tech@www.youtube.com
See you next week! 🌴🤿☀️🦈
(p.s. Nebula version coming soon, too)
