@0x00string@infosec.exchange discipline is rare. monks and nuns are a minority in the world, and the subset of those who aren't performing, but actually living the pious life of learning from the word and the first principles of the world that make it a subject for us to study, are a minority within that minority. I have met very, very few people who truly appreciate and understand the path, and I can count them on one hand, some of them my mentors, and a couple of them my students. It has been, and always was, the rarest of things. Most people just don't want to know and don't believe there's any value in knowing or caring. Same as it ever was.

I usually look back at where I've been and think very earnestly that I would never have taken this road if I knew just how painful it would be to know things and still retain my empathy. But I did, so I'm here. So we're here.

It takes truly becoming a free agent to resist the pull of these kinds of campaigns of deception, especially when there is a real threat of ostracization against anyone who resists. It means you're capable of resisting things that are wrong even when it isn't in your own immediate interest at the first order. You look down on them like ants, and so do we all sometimes, but I implore you to color your pride with a bit of sadness. They weren't idiots so much as they were caged monkeys, intelligent, but the walls of the laboratory were the firmament they knew. The first duty of a prisoner is to escape, but most prisoners only dream about it. It makes what we can, and must do even more important.

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social I'm a flyover country dweller who has been madly in love with the plains as long as I've been alive and this is maybe the best poetry I've read that explains exactly what is so awe inspiring about living in a place where the land is as close to flat as it can get. it's the one place where you can tell how big this entire thing really is. a few of the times I've cried the hardest it was looking up at the milky way where there were no lights for miles, and no hills or mountains to take away any section of the firmament. it was just me and the sky, it was just the finite and infinity. There are people who have never seen a sky with more than a few dozen stars. There are people who think that everything that's here is big.

@hipsterelectron@circumstances.run I'm going to have to go with the classic moment, the blinding of Polyphemus. Polyphemus is a mythical giant and cares little for humans, and eats a few of Odysseus's men. It seems justified that they should kill him or do anything necessary to escape. But what Odysseus does is at first cowardly and cruel, and then prideful and boastful, having the aspect of what Melanie Klein (a very good psychoanalyst) would call contempt and triumph, qua the manic defenses. He tricks Polyphemus in to getting blackout drunk, then he and his men drive a hot poker into his eye, blinding him. To add insult to injury, he reveals his true name to the giant, boasting "I did this to you and hear this is my name!" Before this, he'd said his name was "nobody", to protect himself (because, in the Greek civic and religious schematic, much like ours, knowing a person's name gives you the power to affect their legal person), but he decided "I'm so much better than you that I don't need protection from your crippled ass" basically. Of course, Polyphemus, now knowing his name, pled for the gods to retaliate on his behalf, so even though Odysseus was able to escape with his men, this brought a terrible curse on them. The reason I like this so much is because it directly connects pathological contempt with not only hubris, but also shows how it connects and completes the cycle of violence. "And I'm not sorry!" While they were treated as food, an animal need, they treated him with hatred, and that hatred, being abstract had the memetic power to reproduce itself as a neverending cycle of further violence. This haunts him and his men for the rest of the story!

There is nothing more quintessential to the marginalized subgroup experience on-line than being on several block lists maintained by white women who don't understand what a reclaimed slur is and would at least consider calling the cops on you irl for standing in line at the same gas station

@hipsterelectron@circumstances.run you know, the ancient literature nerd in me was annoyed by the fact that it missed quite a few marks in the original story, but I have to salute how principled and powerful it was in its reframing. for the record though, the original is just as powerful with respect to investigating cruelty and its consequences. there's a reason it's so timeless.

@hipsterelectron@circumstances.run One detail of this that resonates with me really intensely is that relationship between legal names and harm qua the violence of the society or the state being sussed out and examined. Because Polyphemus was given the name "nobody" initially, when he was being stabbed in the eye, he cries out "nobody is killing me!" Nobody is killing me! Lord that line gives me chills. The meaning in that!

Best type of guy hands down, no contest.

I'm not on-line a lot over the whole course of my life, I've been far more on-line since getting an account on here, and I was far more on-line when the public internet was a new thing and you could still dial up bulletin boards. I don't really share most of my life because I've been too many places people can't follow or wouldn't believe a stranger about, no hard feelings on that. Like the bio says, I am now eternally tired. Hoping to accomplish a couple more important things before my stop but I can't be rushed in this state. Bailing the ship takes enough.

Only dudes that can even come close to competing with my former powerlifter husband and that's because their mustaches are too fire. Plus they have that entire thing going on where they're the least controversial public servants. Feds? Depends on why they're there. Cops? Everyone hates the cops. Firefighters? You're never mad the firefighters are there. They're the only people who can bust down your door and you'll say thank you. It's like how nobody's ever stayed mad at an EMT for slicing off their leathers, even if they were hopped up on adrenaline on the ground after a motorcycle accident at the time. Something about guys that go around helping people as a job is so hot and charming.
