Found this album at a swap meet a few months ago and couldn't pass it up. Finally got my turntable fixed and gave it a listen, and hot damn is it a lot less boring that you'd expect from the Xerox name. If this is the kind of fire that was pumping out of the Xerox de Colombia office sound system while they were messing with Xerox Altos (and copiers, I guess) in 1976, sign me the fuck up. #Xerox #Colombia #Vinyl

@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space Yeah, brain fart on my part. I even saw the ones on page 110, wondered why they were there, and didn't clock that the heading said "Mini Diskette" compared to just "Diskette" on page one. Looking back at the original picture now, it's pretty obvious they're 8" disks.

So, as it turns out, these units are not for 5¼" floppies, but 8" floppies. This thing was IMMENSE. Probably close to two feet (~60cm) wide. It would have dominated your desk, if not the room.

I thought the "H" heading were the ones, but those only hold eight, and go with the "Diskette Easel Binder". So I guess they forgot to list the Ring King Royal Blue Housing Frames™ entirely.

@helpsterTee@social.helpsterte.eu If I'm reading it right, the small one comes with the pages, whereas you have to buy the frames for the big one separately. What's funny is that *after* you add all the pages to the big one, the total price comes to $253.70, a whopping 75¢ more than the small one.

@carstenfranke@mastodon.social Likely less than that at the time; the only disks listed for sale are SSSD. Even so, they're selling 10-packs of them for $30-35. The big rolodex plus all 25 pages plus enough disks to fill it would have cost $1152, or over $4600 today. Whatever the data was, it sure better have been important.

@popio@infosec.exchange Yeah. Bare floppy drives themselves in the same catalogue start at ~$280, or ~$500 for externals. On the same page as the fancy carousel is a bin like you might use today (except steel and without a lid) for $10.95. Can't imagine they sold many of the carousel version...

From Wikipedia: "IBM Japan expected to sell 200,000 units of [PCjr-derived] JX, but only 40,000 units were produced. The JX was discontinued in 1987, and IBM Japan gave 15,000 units of JX to its employees in honor of the company's 50th anniversary." Ouch.

In 1982, you could hop down to your nearest Ikea and pick up a whole-ass loom for 2075 kr. (About $750 in 2025 US dollars), or a wee tabletop version for 395 kr.

I have a feeling the difficulty of home assembly might've contributed to it being missing from the catalogue from 1983 on...
