Hotels on #Wikidata are like books, they have a building item (like a work item for books) and at least one hotel item (like an edition). Even when there's only one hotel that's ever been in a given building (or building complex).

@knowprose @anildash I'm not sure Pixelfed fills quite the same function as Flickr. It isn't primarily about describing and organising high-resolution photography, from what I understand. Something like Piwigo.com is perhaps a better model (open source but offers a paid service too). It's three times the price of Flickr, which is probably a bit much for lots of people.

Banking and Capital Markets
Construction and Transportation
Defence
Education
Energy (Oil and Gas)
Entertainment and Media
Financial Services
Government
Healthcare
Infrastructure
Insurance
Mining
Power and Utilities

I wonder what future #genealogy researchers will think of our current excitement with creating AI-enhanced images from old photos. I suspect that they'll just not trust anything we've digitized that isn't accompanied by a meaningful description of how the digitisation was done and what processing was applied.

There are so many images being published these days that just invent details! The generated images are sort of interesting, but people seem to mistake them for reality.

We're all so used to GitHub making it easy to use resources without even thinking about it (and maybe a bit of a feeling that Microsoft is fair game for skimming a bit of cream off the top of).

I like the system of indexing the HTML output, rather than searching the source Markdown. The sites I'm working on have lots of content that's pulled in from elsewhere at build-time, so it's only the HTML that's actually got all everything.

#Pagefind is pretty great! I've just added it to a site, took all of ten minutes. (I mean, probably I've done something wrong, but it seems to work well so far!)

I had been relying on DuckDuckGo for single-site search results, but there's just so much that seems not to be indexed that way. (DDG is still the no-JS fallback.)

(Because they're sites that host lots of archive scans.) There's a long-term resilience in static sites that is somewhat comforting though (at least for the time being).

@kiru@openbiblio.social @raffaele@digipres.club Yes, I think setting up multiple alternative URLs right from the beginning is a great idea. It feels like the modern approach of simplified websites (Markdown, Yaml frontmatter, etc.) is simultaneously splitting sites apart (i.e. the images etc get stored elsewhere) but also making them easier to replicate and so more resilient. I'm currently trying to figure out the easiest way to still make a dump of such a site, when its heavy content is on the Internet Archive etc.

At least the @flickrfdn@glammr.us is upfront about the challenges of what it might mean to have a site online for a century. Maybe WP are just needing more money. I think the best answer is printing the website and putting copies of it in multiple physical archives (or at least friends' houses!). But then I'm a #latex_tex nerd. :-P

A Wikimedian from Fremantle, Western #Australia. I work for the #Wikimedia Foundation, and in my spare time am interested in local history and #genealogy, and write software that does stuff in those areas. I edit #OpenStreetMap and sometimes get away from the computer and into my #woodworking workshop. Photos: Profile portrait is https://w.wiki/5yYs and profile banner is https://flic.kr/p/29K8KLh
