@akareilly@hachyderm.io “If politicians gave a shit about…” pretty much only works when the next word is “money”.

@menos @dangoodin Is this perhaps Google trying to get ahead of the next hype cycle, given the (hopefully) impending AI collapse?

@cstross@wandering.shop I think this is a major reason why LLMs are being pushed so heavily and against all financial logic by these massive corporations and billionaires. Though it always has to some extent, in the age of “AI” money literally equals truth. If fact is just the statistically most likely combination of words in a training set, then those with the most resources, who can buy the most domains and publish their propaganda the fastest/most completely, will always be “right.” And since we have ceded all control of our attention to the same billionaires, they can simultaneously strangle all real content creators by denying them any traffic.

@martin @shredder7579 @bob_zim @jk That’s another part of the problem and proves yet again that LLMs are toys, not suitable for actual work. Real production systems, and actual software development requires deterministic outputs for a given input. The fact that the same prompt will return different results day to day, or even between queries with the same exact model is a huge problem. Even if there is “enormous maturation” (citation needed), that problem will never go away. It’s baked in to the design of the system. Also, you know, stealing everything on the internet, ruining the economy, and melting the planet.

@shredder7579 @bob_zim @martin @jk That’s my experience as well. Beyond the enormous ethical and environmental problems, it just doesn’t work well. It’s very impressive if you’re not paying attention, but to do anything useful it falls over really fast. Even the single line autocomplete is usually more annoying than useful. It just keeps wanting to generate more and more and gets less and less relevant to the context.

@shredder7579 @martin @jk LLMs churn out crap incessantly. These “tools” are in no way better than knowing how your code works. As for the “boilerplate/migration” argument, I see this assertion all the time but never any specifics. Like, how much boilerplate is everyone writing that they need an LLM to do it for them? Not to mention that every line of code generated by LLM is stolen without attribution, and almost certainly against the license of many of the projects that were lifted. Also, you know, boiling the planet just so some tech bros can avoid learning how to do their job (or paying someone who knows).
