@davidgerard how about we tax the everliving fuck out of them instead? To a point where LLMs will fund the universal basic income they will necessitate...

@hopeless dude, you're missing my point. What are LLMs trained on? FOSS among everything else. That FOSS was written by people who knew how to write software, and who decided to then share. Can LLMs be sustained without the thankless free labor of FOSS maintainers is the thing I am asking.
I fear an LLM centipede is our future, with young people focusing on prompting instead of learning and practicing.
Additionally, if I can solve my issue in a weekend with $500, why share?

@seanfurey I assume you're referring to the ISO containers. Can you please check how long did it take to switch to predominantly containerized shipping, and was it two years? Because this is the chief issue -- short-sighted companies WILL fire en-masse not leaving time for people to re-specialise/transition safely and peacefully to a new craft.

@seanfurey @mjg59 lmao. Assuming a total of 20 million software developers world-wide, what is the problem with firing 5-10 million people in the span of 1-2 years? You really can't think of any problem with this except the blatant copyright violations and disastrous environmental impact? Those are people my guy, they and their families need food, shelter, healthcare, and people can't just choose a new craft, let alone while competing with a couple of million in the same situation...

@mjg59 but wait, there's more
What if you're not renowned security expert and open-source celebrity @mjg59 (that currently works at nvidia btw, profiting from the LLM boom, sorry) but just some guy trying to make ends meet doing some coding?...
Now you get an LLM mandate from your company that comes with the implication that 'either you boost your productivity with 80% or we fire you and contract a cheap prompter in your place'...

@mjg59 you might be missing a few of people's issues with LLMs. Our programmer standpoint is quite niche.
What happens to people with jobs that are affected by LLMs? They either start using LLMs to match the competition's performance, or get obsoleted... What if they can't actually afford using LLMs to stay competitive?...
And then there's art.
On top of all of that LLMs are energy and resource-hungry, ruining the environment and making everything more expensive...

@etchedpixels gonna need a source on that. In my experience meshtastic/meshcore are very susceptible to interference, and as far as I am hearing, the Ru government has already taken measures against meshtastic... Can't have drones OR your own citizens communicate freely after all!!

@akareilly multi-year funding has always been sorely lacking, and in my experience has led to the endless re-implementation of government software as well as other issues. // @PepperTheVixen

While you may not be in the EU now, the directive applies to any natural or legal person providing products on the common EU market, so I assume there will be 'viral' benefits for people outside the EU.

Well do I have news for you then... Not only was the EU already requiring the public sectors' websites to be accessible (see WAD), it is now requiring a plethora of private sector *products* to be as well:
See European Accessibility Act -- https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32019L0882
The question about enforcement remains. I am certain there will be proactive enforcement when public procurement is concerned. But for private businesses enforcement will have to be triggered by signals.

@PepperTheVixen apart from the indirect benefit of software being more accessible to them, people with disabilities will be able to directly profit as new job positions will be open -- at the very least for their unique input in designing software, and their unique input in testing and validation. @akareilly

The solution to all of this IMO is *not* just throwing away all other ethical concerns in favour of accessibility at any cost, and bankrolling Google while they develop software for the US dept' of war.
IMO the solution is targeted redirection funds from corps to FLOSS improvement/independent development.
With the main governing principle 'if public funds were received, then the produced source must be open.'

@PepperTheVixen, proprietary software outside the context of government is unethical even by the very narrow definition of FLOSS. Big corp proprietary software is unethical due to a plethora of other reasons, as is funding them, especially with public funds. Inaccessible FLOSS is unethical by virtue of it being exclusionary.

@PepperTheVixen, tell me, how do you make an able-ist dev put labour and funds in fixing the inaccessible UI and bad UX of their software, be it FLOSS or proprietary?
I say, if they're unwilling to do shit for free because of ethics (I assume they aren't, since they're ableist), and you're unable to scratch your own itch, you pay someone to fork them and do it for you. If you personally can't afford this, then IMO the government should, by funding FLOSS accessibility. // @akareilly

@gunchleoc single word in your toot --- if you're serious about software *ethics*, you should at least make an effort to allow as many people as possible to use said software. @akareilly

@gunchleoc, as mentioned, we're not talking about the BDSM Trabant in your personal garage. That - nobody is entitled to tell you how accessible you have to make it.
We've also determined that 'good' in terms of quality (accessible, privacy-preserving, secure, reliable) software is not made solely by it being FLOSS.
FLOSS is ethical as per the definition -- software respects the users' fundamental freedoms -- to run it, change it, and distribute it.

@akareilly and while a license does not indeed make a software good, it does make a software bad. Especially in the case of a government, where fundung proprietary software development IMO is a complete waste of public funds even when not funding comapnies actively developing software that kills human rights, people and the environment.

@akareilly this is in no way in conflict with the requirement to provide accessible services, as funds that go faceless corps can be shifted instead to enhancing existing software or creating new software that fits the quality and accessibility standards of the government.
And no, this doesn't mean funding DHH as one example of an open-source fascist. It means funding companies to enhance existing or develop completely new software. 2/..
