So it looks like the best combo for Virtual machines on my box:
- QEMU/KVM for all Linux guests
- PCem for Windows up to and including 98
- VMWare for Windows XP onwards

I can run all three with good performance and have 3D passthrough where needed. Virtualbox would have been in there if I could run it at the same time as KVM.

If I get 'Super Serious', having a GPU dedicated to a Windows Guest via KVM/QEMU is probably the way to go. That might involve a separate box.

I chose not to choose Windows. I chose something else. And the reasons? Who needs reasons, when you've got sherbert-I mean - Linux

So it looks like the best option for spellchecking with Helix, is ltex-ls. It's a java latex like affair but once installed it seems to do the job well and overall, despite me having to faff to get it all setup, it does seem a little more useful than Vims spellchecking. Some details here: https://fryboyter.de/en/use-language-tool-with-restrictions-in-the-helix-editor/

As much as I enjoy and use #Linux all the time, I do wonder if Linus Torvalds is the right person to lead the project these days? His recent post on #LLMs says less about LLMs and more about his morals and lack of philosophical understanding about where technology actually sits in the world - https://lore.kernel.org/linux-media/CAHk-=wi4zC+Ze8e+p3tMv8TtG_80KzsZ1syL9anBtmEh5Z40vg@mail.gmail.com/

Debating which virtualisation VM solution to use. Folks suggest kvm/qemu might be fastest but Virtualbox seems to have better desktop support and 3D acceleration. For running older systems, which do folks think is best? Apparently I can't have both as the kernel modules conflict. #virtualbox #kvm #qemu #virtualmachine

I find it gobsmacking that in 2026, I can't really install an English spell checker for a text editor in Debian, with a single command.

In the past, we had stories and legends, oral history and rituals. Today, my nostalgia and links to the past are dominated by TV adverts. I hate it! For all our technical wonders, our greed has cut us off from our past.

Quite worried that electrical item repair is too difficult - we had an air-fryer last night we couldn't fix. Most of it was likely fine. It'll head to landfill because of some tiny error that requires very specific knowledge to diagnose. Likely one tiny item or even just a system reset would fix it. #repaircafe #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle

Patched! That copy.fail bug seems pretty wild but then if your OS is open-source it can be tested and fixed quickly. You've got the widest programmer base. Managed to get my server sorted and back up pretty fast thanks to the hard work of all the maintainers.

Hello there. I'm looking to get #fedihired -bit new to it all. I've been a software engineer for a while, briefly a scientist with A.I. and biology leanings. I've done a lot of computer graphics and computer vision. Any folks looking to hire or have any suggestions of where to look please?

Deleted my Google Account today. It's somewhat symbolic of what the internet has become. I remember wanting to work for google, being impressed by all the stuff they made. But now? Their time has passed and they only bring disappointment.

@russss Yeah. I'm being somewhat cheeky. I fear cyclists are perhaps held to higher standards than other road users :/

@chainq Regardless, I'm sorry you feel that way. I think I feel the same about it. I'm not entirely sure how I'll weather the change. I'm still going with a bucket-list-hobby project I want done, but I'll likely shift to a security or science role for a job instead of programming. It'll suck for a bit but there will be a silver lining somewhere I think :)

@chainq I disagree completely with the democratisation though. Programming has been _very_ democratic for a long time. The barriers to entry are very low (books, internet, cheap raspberry pi etc). Like writing or drawing, you can just do it. The _only_ barrier is commitment and a willingness to accept a challenge. What's different is that unlike art, the _human voice_ isn't really that important in code. folks just want it to work :/

@chainq This rings quite true to me. I've never had the joy of anyone using the tools I've made - I've never managed to submit anything to a FOSS project sadly. But connection and being valued is super important yes. That relationship might change. I suspect a lot of use technical folk might have to go more sysad, security or similar to keep these connections maybe?

@chainq your comment about average (I read non-programmers) creating things they couldn't before reminds me of something Trent Reznor said about electronic music. "The tools are better and theres a lot more music, but is there more _good_ music? No." Youtube is also a good example - the majority is awful but the good stuff relies on a _deeper_ knowledge of the craft.

@chainq I suppose change is inevitable and sometimes good. This change feels bad. Seems like software engineering and programming was mostly a mess, then A.I. threw petrol on that fire. I do wonder about our Artist and Writer friends who've already been facing this A.I. change for a while now.

@chainq do you program for a job? I've been wondering about a serious career change which adds a layer of worry on top. I know that A.I isn't going to stop senior software dev work (which was never 100% about programming) but this idea of craft, care and thought does seem to be going away. I don't know if it's better or worse that it's my job as oppose to hobby. Perhaps it will just become a hobby? Either way, you are not the first person I've heard who has voiced these concerns
