@mayintoronto@beige.party Ehh, I think it's useful to make a distinction between advertorials, crap articles by rushed reporters who don't have time to do proper research, crap opinion columns, biased but more or less accurate reporting, guest op-eds by people with potentially undisclosed agendas, statements from the editorial board, etc.

Personally I dislike them because I find the format deceptive. On the other hand, there are plenty of lazy news articles that are basically just regurgitated press releases.

just a quick reminder to anyone seeing this that it's been less than a month since the lead dev used the official account to boost his long, cringily appropriated-Black-American-English, now deleted trying-to-be-a-"they-can't-keep-us-down"-rap-song rant (he is neither American nor Black) apparently relating to a dispute about potential in-app ads with a sometime contributor (https://social.besties.house/@h/113730903264902154) who is like, 18? also did not react well to being (gently) called out (by another fedi dev, not some random) about said language use. and probably less than a month before he was Not Making Friends by being all like "i'm progressive BUT fuck the postal strike" (you haven't heard about it because it was in canada sorry) so personally i would hold off on any significant public or financial support for pixelfed until the project gets some actual governance where it's not just one emotionally immature guy having the keys??? also just in case this is relevant everyone involved is extremely queer and gay. him, the devs, me. #FediMeta

Today City Council does The Budget. The cost of COVID has left the City with huge holes in the budget that will be a challenge to fill. But the austerity budget is overshadowed by the revelation of the mayor's inappropriate relationship with a staffer and his promised (and, by some councillors, protested) resignation. This…complicates…the new "strong mayor" powers bequeathed by the Province that give the rest of Council limited ability to change the budget. Today will be a spicy one.
