Note that I actually don't know exactly my age, as I don't celebrate birthdays and I don't find it relevant in my daily chores. Then, from time to time (rarely indeed) I see someone I knew in my early years, and I think "wow, they're old". At that point I have to resort to a calculator to desume my age - because with mental calculation the result is "weird".

I made a wild guess.
Suppose you want to collect more information in Europe, stealing everyone's data as you already do in the US. Then you go to a smart device manufacturer's in the US and say: "you're devices are widespread everywhere, we have a good idea to let you stay in business. Start with an ex-European country, an almost ex-ally. Enforce adult verification, you know that now or later it will be rule. Then collect all the data for us. This is a one time offer"

@notjustbikes I think that the hypothesis on oil prices is wrong, unfortunately.
The slow, progressive, changes have happened because of environment pollution. What's unfortunate is the too slow reaction to an environmental crisis.
Now oil prices should be the main concern for a change? A totally wrong view on the real crisis, driven by stock markets, instead of the real problems.
In the 70s there wasn't an idea of how serious things are today.

@evacide The hard part is not letting anyone be wrong on the Internet, that happens naturally, all the time. What's difficult is making anybody conscious to be wrong, on the Internet.
Once, communication with a wide audience was driven by entities with some authority on that media. Somebody authoritative, some other authoritarian, but whatever the narration always showing to be "right".
Hence, anybody writing on this media (like I do now) feels to have inherited that power to be "right". G'd lk

And Rome is a city around Vatican City State, where laws and rules are dictated.
I'm sure Vatican City is a state around something smaller, where laws and rules are conceived.
That said, the Italian Constitution promises to be a secular one, but every article is checked to make happy everyone in those inner circles. Pure magic.

@ahltorp The first version of Linux I actually installed was from Lasermoon, an UK distributor, Linux-FT 1.x, and it did run on a 486 with 4 MiB RAM. We used it, along with early Slackware, on many 486 on static IPs to the net, for some time.
A colleague some 10thousand km from the office, one day that no one was noticing him online, logged on a machine to play the "when henry met sally" notable scene, on the speaker. That generated quite some hilarity in the silent office.

@colinstu In the era of the first Pentium processors we had 8 MiB (yes, Mibi) of RAM quite often, and 16 MiB the lucky ones.
Had a colleague who wrote a memory leaking application, because he wrote convoluted C++ code, instantiating too many out of control classes - the style that I would later witness with Java.
When he got a new job position he was triumphant: "Ha! Now I have a PC with 256 megs!".
He didn't realize that any space can be filled.

@can I guess that back when they chose DigitalOcean they were happy with the fact it was only "located" in Europe with their branch (I see it's in Amsterdam, not UK as I thought).
Then there are many stupid and meaningless things done in Brussels, like when the EU proposed the survey to support open software to be reported in xlsx format...
For my personal things I choose only EU/EFTA businesses, maybe european bureaucrats should be taught better too. 🤷♂️
