My mentor in the wine biz had a pet theory that wine regions should be demarcated not by political boundaries but by riversheds. It works pretty well in Western Europe (the Loire, Rhone, Mosel/Moselle, etc). In North America wines from MI, NY, ON, and QC have more similarities than not: they're all products of the Great Lakes watershed.

I've given up on trying to break into the local trans community in part because the cost of entry is a militant anti-Zionism within which JVP represents the moderate position. A lot of people seem genuinely to believe that the opposite of a Jew is not a gentile, but a Palestinian. It's a real bad dynamic.

Now there's a constitutional amendment that puts a citizen commission in charge of redistricting. I'm not saying it can't be done here. But it can't be done quickly and unilaterally.

I briefly went to Canada this evening and the whole time I was driving around Windsor I kept thinking people were judging me for having Michigan plates.

When I pulled up to the US border station, there was a gigantic pickup in the next lane with a tailgate decal that was the US flag, along with a man in silhouette kneeling next to a cross, supoorted by a crutch or possibly a rifle?

They have a vested interest in making their organization seem powerful, even if its power is waning (which it is). I was in the hall at the Michigan Dems nominating convention last week. The AIPAC-aligned Senate candidate was booed all through her speech. The candidate who explicitly disavowed AIPAC was the crowd favorite. AIPAC is just a regular PAC. Not a bunch of foreigners, not a scary cabal.

But this is as clear an example as I've ever seen of the dual loyalty trope: the canard that Jews cannot be true citizens of any country, because their secret loyalty lies elsewhere. It's no longer considered acceptable for straight people to decide what's homophobic, or non-Black people to decide what's racist. But for some reason non-Jews get to decide what is and isn't antisemitic.

Declaring that Jews you don't like are foreigners, are weaving "spiderwebs," are incapable of legitimate political participation— these are classic antisemitic tropes. It is actually very easy to criticize AIPAC without resorting to antisemitism. Many people, including Jews, do this all the time.
