Limit the number of variables and points of failure An antenna analyzer as a learning tool is a great way to see if the antenna is at least behaving roughly like it should, and also takes a lot of guesswork out of troubleshooting I wish that 10m, especially over line of sight, were more active around my QTH as that makes the Technician section the best place to learn… and where the homemade antennas are much more manageably sized

Advice I wish I didn’t get with my General #hamradio ticket: Random wire antenna This should not be your first HF antenna. To use it you need an antenna tuner, and many starter SDR rigs have an ATU built in. In myself and others around me, the ATU gives a low SWR and the appearance of perfect operation, but you have no intuition for how much of your transmit power comes out as RF energy vs. heat At that point there are a thousand points of failure you don’t know to check, so the first time you call CW to the void you have no idea if yuure holding the mic wrong, your rig is misconfigured, or if the band is closed Work to minimize unknowns by making as many parts of your kit known quantities. This is why I wish someone told me to just get a pretuned 40m EFHW out of the gate

At USD 600 that’s Xiegu money, you get 6m and a detachable face. You don’t want an ATU when learning the ins and outs of HF antennas, but the 100 watts will prevent a lot of early frustration I don’t have one yet, but want that as a perfect pairing to the no nonsense FTM-150RASP, which despite having menus has the right number of knobs

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io @blogdiva@mastodon.social yiu got me thinking of the places I’ve worked at over the years and wondering if there were libraries there and where they were hiding It used to be that to graduate as a professional meant you were sent out as an autonomous knowledge system: the skills in your new professional brain, your class notes and work output as reference to support how you operate, and your textbooks and thesis were the germ of your professional research library where every word on every page is a point in a space you can navigate to and every bibliographic citation a trailhead But they never told me of this so I threw out my notes and sold my textbooks when life dropped a figurative piano on me so I only started to get the point when I read Umberto Eco’s ‘How to Write a Thesis’ about 25 years too late That’s why I have a library including a collection of programming books written no later than 2007. I know they are there and that the slop machine can’t replace them
