@jake4480@c.im I’ve been using Ecosia for the past six months or so but Kagi is new to me. Part of this process I think does have to include paying for what I like and want in some areas.

@jake4480@c.im We’re sort of reinventing and re-solving the discoverability problem aren’t we? Upon a time it was hard to find things because the search engine hadn’t been invented yet and we were relying on curated lists and people actively submitting to directories - and now search is enshittified and we’re back to wanting lists! #indieweb #smallweb

RE: https://www.leia.cymru/2026/05/10/why-am-i-writing-a-blog-in-2026/
I miss the "old internet" and I'm thinking aloud trying to work out how I fix that.

So regardless of the fine details, data is showing that low turnout will most favour Reform. Women not voting will favour Reform. Young people not voting will favour Reform.
Please find go and vote. Lesser Evilism is as depressing as hell I know, I get it, but please.
Go and vote.

Lingering over a second coffee because I got up too early, forgetting I had to go via the polling station before work and it doesn’t open until 7.

@vagina_museum That you don’t have to keep the fact you’re having one top secret - smuggling pads into the loo hidden in tissue boxes and similar nonsense! The best thing about covid was the hot water bottle in the lap for cramps. Had been settling for paracetamol in-office.
I get active pleasure from stubborn non-secrecy these days. “Oh are you cold?” - “Nope I have period pain”. Stunned Silence. But why though? If I had said I had a heat pad for back pain would have been unremarkable.

@kete @AimeeMaroux Yes on most of that except I don’t see any mechanism to get there without the working class power emboded in unions - that’s about the only thing that has ever moved the needle towards those things.

@kete @AimeeMaroux Assuming good intent I’ll take it as a timing issue then. Your timing was bad. When women are saying they feel unsafe we never need to hear “defend yourself” not “how do we change the space.”
There IS no way to make that land. It’s never new info . It’s never something we didn’t already know.
We’ve been told it since we were in school. It’s never a reminder we want or need in the moments after saying “this feels unsafe.”
We Know! And telling us again never feels good.

Surely surely you meant to say was
“what we ideally need is one or more of the following
More women on tech companies boards so they can point out these bloody obvious issues earlier in the process
Legislation to force comoanies to prove they’ve considered the societal harm of their product.
Strong unions to fight automation related reduction in staffing
Right?

@kete @AimeeMaroux Wait - re-read that a sec - is your argument really that women need to make themselves more prepared to meet violence with violence so that tech bros can get rich off self driving buses and bus companies can get richer by reducing headcount?
That’s can’t be the side you picked right? You didn’t on purpose pick the side of Men Get Richer over Women Get Safer by telling women to hut people more often?

@futurebird@sauropods.win @toba@zeroes.ca Hope you’re not in the minority but fear you are!
When I was still teaching I had people who hadn’t done well in traditional ed. Main assessment was taped “professional discussion”. Student talked me through their answers. I asked follow-ups (& sometimes Qs to illicit what I suspected they knew but forgot to mention). I timestamped against curriculum and that’s what we handed in.
Mind you I had cohorts of 12 not 200. You’d have to cull a LOT of busywork elsewhere to scale it!

@futurebird@sauropods.win @toba@zeroes.ca To be honest most college and higher level “classes” are stand-and-deliver lectures from the front that could very easily be a video to watch as the “homework” with the actual assessment than done in class time. Might hurt professors’ egos to be superseded by their YouTube self but it’d fix their cheating problem!

@toba@zeroes.ca It shocks me not in the slightest - it’s the new copy and paste. Which was in turn the crib off your mates. Kids and young adults cheat when arbitrary writing tasks become high stakes assessment and ever had. But teaching staff STILL aren’t asking if arbitrary writing tasks are the right assessment tool.
